Hi

I'm 24 years old and my pap test came back positive for HPV today. Prior to receiving this result today I have been experiencing a constant vulval burning pains and general warmth in the area. I have had tests to check for yeast or bacteria and they have both come back negative. The symptoms continue to persist, I'm very nervous because I can't imagine what else could be causing this pain. I've booked in to see a vulva specialist for an opinion. Is it possible that this could be something else ?

    Hi ,

I'm sorry to hear you are here and potentially worried about cancer. You might find our pages about HPV helpful.

'Some types of HPV can increase the risk of developing cancer. These are called high-risk HPVs. But it is important to note that most people with HPV will not develop cancer.'

No one here is about to guess anything about your symptoms, and it wouldn't be wise to. The only person that can do that is your GP, so go back to them if you have further concerns. In the meantime, try not to worry or research online as this will only heighten your concern.

    Best wishes,

    Jess

Hi ! I have the same problem as well. I tried doing a vinegar test around my vulva and found few white spots, which put me to freak out since I know it would indicate lesions. I’ve been experiencing these for months and after reading a lot about HPV I’m drawing to a conclusion that I might have VIN .. I just want to ask did your GP referred you to a vulvar specialist? Is it from NHS? Thanks a lot. I want to see a vulvar specialist but consulting to private doctors in UK are very expensive .

Hi, I went to the GP as I found a small lump on my vulva. She then referred me to a consultant gynacologist (nhs). The consultant found white areas and so completed an acetic acid test and biopsy  which diagnosed Vin 3. Kind regards and best wishes

    Summer Blue,

I’m here is the U.S. keeping a good thought. I’m sorry your results were diagnosed as Vin 3. I’m unsure of all the possible diagnosis and treatments for each, but...I am keeping a good thought for you, friend.

  • Hi Candy777,

I am sorry that you are having vulvar pain, I hope the specialist can find out what cause is. I have been having VIN3 for a couple of years, yes I need to keep having surgeries every time when they come back. I already have had 4 times and WILL have another in two months. My symptom is usually vulvar pain, itch and burn when I urinate. I always check my vulva if there are any changes(bumps or skin changes) and usually I can tell the changes, but sometimes not visible. Vinegar test would be a good idea to see if you have VIN. It turns white if you have VIN usually. But this is from my experience.  I do understand how you feel, I also had severe pain for about 2 years due to nerve damage from radiation therapy(I had vaginal cancer).  I hope you feel better soon!

    Thank you for your reply!

The symptom I have is burning. No itching. I did have a small cut but it has healed and is only red in the area. Very hard for me to see (it’s at bottom and just outside of vagina.)  I’ve seen a hormone doctor + my family doctor. Neither seem worried (actually didn’t even mention VIN or cancer) I did ask my family doctor + she said it’s not cancer. I do remember stinging then stupid me having a bath with bath salts which burned SO bad. I don’t know if this would cause a chemical burn and therefore cause burning for 2 months!

Maybe I’ll try the vinegar test.  I’m now on my second yeast infection in 2 months (I’ve never in my life had one!) so making matters worse.  I see a gyno in a week.

I have also recently started taking oral progesterone - this all happened a week and a half later.  I’m 47 and have had a rough time so far with peri-menopause - might have something to do with this burning - who knows!

Sorry to hear of your struggles - I hope all goes well with your surgery.  You just be a very strong lady. So bumps and itching/burning were your symptoms?

    Thank you!
