When Chemo doesn't work

Hello, (I'm going to put this on the breast cancer group too)

I had my scan to determine my surgery last Thursday after 7 cycles of chemo. Ok I know I haven't seen the consultants yet but deep down I know the chemo hasn't worked because the tumour  feels almost the same as when I started this journey. I'm also getting the same pain in my breast and under my arm.

I'm trying not to dwell on it. The lady who did my MRI asked me at the end how many cycles of chemo I had done. When I said 7 she was surprised. I said I know, it is still there and nearly as big. She put her hand on mine and smiled. The tumour was 6cm when I started chemo in MArch. When I went to the clinic originally in February it was just 2.5 cm.

I think although I knew it wasn't altering much, the possibility that is true is dawning on me!! Did anyone else have this scenario please? I know treatment isn't over yet, I just want the surgery to happen now. I'm supposed to have another cycle in 1 1/2 weeks and surgery in September. Could they bring it forward if I ask them to?

Hopefully xxx

PS Sorry if I have confused people. I'm a bit heywire and struggling a bit. xx

  • Thankyou for sharing your story . I am still really struggling and am beginning to resign myself to not being here anymore .  It all feels really surreal xx

  • Dear Harleybear

i am sorry to hear this. You are just at the beginning. Take each day as it comes and try to talk to someone locally to you. I found the Maggie’s centre helpful. The lady there kept me going and I’m here to tell the tale. I am grateful for my treatment and take each day positively. Some days it is hard and surreal as you say but you will do each day. I’m sorry I can’t help anymore than this. Hugs dear lady. HuggingHugging

I have just finished neo adjuvant treatment 3 Cycles EC and 4 carbo / paclitaxel. The scan showed that the chemo didn’t work. It did shrink first 4 mm but grew after. The tumour has grown 2 mm but instead of 4 LN there are now multiple abnormal LN , even by the collar bone. I’m waiting now for surgery but cannot take the LN by the collar bone., waiting for radiation for that . But it means no treatment to the LN for 9 weeks . I’m worried about further spread. Anybody similar experiences ? Thanks

  • I can’t comment on LN but I too was told my neo adjuvant chemo has no effect on tumour .  I had a long wait to surgery because of another  operation I needed . Following histology of the tumour it did show there has been an effect if the chemo on the tumour . It just didn’t show on the MRI .  My consultant said this can happen and it is not until it is removed that they get the full picture .  I  now doing adjuvant chemo . Don’t lose heart .  Xx
