I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer with tall cell morphology . I have had a complete thyroidectomy and left sided lymph glands removed. I have had RAI treatment which unfortunately has failed. However I now have tiny spots of thyroid cancer in my lungs. The plan is regular scans and blood tests to keep an eye on this. I am female and 71. Has anybody any advice how to deal with this.
Hello Dlb, sorry to read your RAI failed and they have now found lung mets. That's not the news you wanted to hear. I don't have the same variant as you but can empathise with the watch and wait scenario as that's how they monitor mine. You're kind of left to get on with dealing with life in between blood tests & scans and it can create a lot of anxiety for some people. It does for me.
I've found that trying to quieten my brain from spiralling is the only way forward and for me that's walks in nature with my dog and writing down in a notebook all the wildlife I see through the seasons, it just seems to be a good distraction. If I do that at least once a day I can just about keep on top of it all but everyone is different and we have to try to find our own coping mechanism.
If you weren't already aware, Macmillan have free counselling sessions and their helpline is always available. I went to a Maggie's centre near me too when it all got a bit much in the early days.
I'd like to tag Gold Finch here if she doesn't mind, as I think I remember she has the same tall cell variant as you. (I hope I've got that right!)
I wish you the best as you find your best way through this but just know you're not alone and although this forum isn't the fastest, there's usually someone around who's been through it that will pop on at some point and try and help.
Medullary Thyroid cancer dx May 2023
Hi, thanks for tagging me.
yes, I am one with the tall cell variant. At Addenbrookes they say they get only one case each year so it’s quite rare.
I am now on annual checks - a blood test and maybe a scan in May I imagine.
I try not to worry about it too much. My husband died at the end of November from a rare bowel cancer diagnosed 5 years ago, so I suppose mine has felt pretty minor by comparison. I’m now trying to put my life back together in the shadow of what might happen to me. But I’m trying to ignore it, going away tomorrow on a big trip abroad and will probably return to work in April or May. I think keeping busy is the way forward and making the most of every day, as much as is possible. Somehow my husband’s dreadful experience has lessened my fear.
Surely positivity is the way forward - hard but vital I think.
Thank you yes I try to stay positive and mostly can do that
. I am determined to get on and enjoy my life.
Condolences on your loss.
