Hair and nails!

I have been struggling massively with hair loss since my thyroid removal 12 months  ago.  I look like a scarecrow at best and even hair dye doesn’t last more than 2 weeks so my hair is also a horrible yellow!  I’m feeling guilty moaning   as I’m fortunate to have had excellent treatment but these side effects make me feel very low and ugly.   I’m trying to stay positive but despite painstakingly drying my hair. I go outside and wish I had never bothered as it’s a mass of unruly frizz.  It just makes me feel so ugly. I’ve spent fortunes on hair bond rebuilders promising smooth silky locks but nothing! I still resemble Worzel Gummidge (no idea of  spelling) for anyone as old as me that remembers himJoy

any tips suggestions wtc would be welcomed I’m even toying with hair extensions but not sure my tender scalp would cope with them !

so sorry to moan but I’m just wondering if anyone else is struggling .  Don’t even get me started about my nails…..

  • Hi

When I lost my hair during chemo for a different type of cancer, I was advised to use the mildest shampoo I could and not use anything with harsh chemicals in, like hair dye, for at least 6 months. This certainly worked for me.

  • Thanks for your message and I’m sorry to hear about your health.  I know hair is the least of our concerns but it’s been an identity thing with me.  I’m grateful for all the help I co tiniest receive fur which I’m very thankful and fortunate.  I’ll just keep going with my hair and hope it recovers eventually.  Very best wishes to you

  • Hello, I was going to post on here to see if anyone had any ideas on hair loss. I’m now 6 years post thyroidectomy and am still in thyroid suppression for another 6 months. I’ve slowly been loosing my hair but recently it’s really got me down. I’m hoping mine might grow back when they ease off the suppression and so I’m trying to hang on in there, but it’s so hard. I’m really struggling with how I look now too.
Sadly I’ve no ideas about what to do but I can definitely empathise with you.

  • Hi I had total thyroidectomy 6 months ago I'm having problems not sleeping enough. Consultant  said it might be levothyroxine. He did say speak to gp but I don't want to be given sleeping pills. I think it must all to do with hormones unbalanced even though in normal range. My hair does go dry and itchy sometimes. I'm still on calcium d3tabs at moment. And have a bit of eczema on back of my neck.
