Thyroid cancer

Hi everyone

I'm new to your discussion here and sorry to read all your stories.
I have had a multi modular goitre for over 25 years and have lived alongside this until last year as it started to put pressure on my throat. The specialist decided to do a partial thyroidectomy last October (2024). The procedure went well other than I lost my voice for. Few weeks (which did return). On my check up they told me that they did find papillary thyroid cancer on two nodules. I started to feel much better until about 3 weeks ago when I could feel pressure from the remaining side of my thyroid which gives you a sensation your being strangled. I am awaiting some sort of response from the very busy ENT department.
I have to say that being told you have cancer is a massive shock and the very distressful to cope with. My family never talk about it  but I play it down so nobody gets upset.

Anyway, I wish you all well

  • Hi Nm13, welcome to the forum although sorry you find yourself here.
Yes it’s such an awful shock when you hear your cancer diagnosis. My family are like yours and don’t like to talk about it but luckily I have a fantastic daughter who has supported me through it all. Do you have anyone else you can talk to or go to for support? I first went to a Maggie’s centre near me, it was good to talk to someone unconnected to me, that I knew I wasn’t going to frighten or upset. The Macmillan support lines are there too if you need them and of course there’s us lot on this forum who you can ask/tell anything. It’s sometimes a bit slow but usually a member will come along and help if they feel they can.

I also wouldn’t be put off by the department telling you how busy they are, you are important and you need to know your treatment plan. Some of us found it a lot less stressful when that plan is in place. Unfortunately many of us have had the experience that we have to chase through everything.

Best wishes going forward and let us know how you get on. X
