Hi lm new to this group, my cancer journey or should l say my cancer nightmare started last year. lm a 55 year old woman who currently feels a lot older, l had no health issues before this. l am struggling with not being able to get my meds right, RAI has thrown me full pelt into the menopause. l have so many things wrong at the moment that even my gp is struggling, my blood pressure, my heart is now playing up also. l really think this is all to do with the medication, would be intersting to know if others have any problems and lm not alone xx
Hi Murtle and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read about all the problems you're having.
I can't help with any shared experience but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be easier to spot. While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi Murtle,
I'm sorry to hear that treatment has affected you so badly. The radioactivity carries on working for up to a year in lots of cases, including my own, so don't despair that you won't ever feel any better than you do right now.
I had high blood pressure before I had the operations and the RAI and it hasn't worsened for me. I wonder if you ceveloping other health issues has coincided with the cancer diagnosis for you and you're dealing with a difficult double whammy?
I hope you get support from your GP, it can be an uphill battle at times as a middle aged woman I know. I hope you get lots of support here and thst reading the threads helps you to feel less alone.
Hi Murtle, sorry to hear you are struggling with treatment and other health complications but just to add to River71 please be reassured you aren't on your own. I thought it might help to recount my circumstances that led me here as I feel there are some similarities.
I'm 57 now but was diagnosed menopausal and spent 5 + years with my health declining and my GP still insisting it was menopause!! Until amongst other symptoms, I was so chronically fatigued I could barely walk my dogs round a field! Like you, I'd gone from healthy, fit running 10ks to this! After trying all the HRTs over this time, GP then said, nothing more she could think of and perhaps I should go to a private menopause clinic!! Cost me a fortune I could barely afford and of course didn't help. Not long after that my neck lump appeared and the rest is history as they say. Unfortunately in this time it had spread.
So to put that in context, alot of my "menopause symptoms" were in fact down to my thyroid cancer and the hrt combi patches are now dealing fine with my mild symptoms. In fact I'd come off those but don't want to alter too many variables until my TSH levels are right.
I can't speak for the RAI sorry as my type of thyroid cancer (medullary) doesn't respond to it, so mine was treated all surgically but as regards the medications, did you mean the Levothyroxine too? Then yes it's taking its time to get that right too (same with others on here too if you put that in the search) But that's all being done with my brilliant consultant, certainly don't trust my GP with that!!!
I'm sorry to hear about your BP and heart complications, that's all you need added on top!
After being a bit long winded and saying all that sorry I'm not really sure I've been much help, apart from hopefully showing you're not alone and this forum is a huge resource with some very friendly, experienced people that are always kind enough to reply when I've asked anything at all x
Medullary Thyroid cancer dx May 2023
Thank you for your reply, you mentioned thyroid and menopause symptoms being the same, this is one thing lm struggling with because its finding out whats causing me to feel so poorly, everything seems to cause anxiety so we dont stand a chance really, l know things will get better, l think l need to draw a line under the person l was and start looking after the new me xx
Hi thank you for your reply, my blood pressure was always spot on then l felt unwell for a couple of days so went to my doctors my blood pressure was 201/120 my doctor said it was impressive so put me on betta blockers, then they doubled dosage, now because they discovered my heart slow down a lot at night they cut the dose, l read somewhere lm sure that if your dose of levothyroxine isnt high enough it can cause your heart to slow x
Hi lve filled in my profile and posted it now, thought l had done it but hadnt pressed update lol, that also seems to be another side effect, Ditsy not the word. Thank you for the bumping my post xx
