Long storey short- I had breast cancer this year, bye started getting bad headaches and bone pain. Had CT, MRI and PET in the pas could months. Good news I don’t have secondary cancer, but the PET brought up a nodule on on thyroid.

had biopsy last week, called y’day to follow up but they couldn’t tell me the results but they would chase up the appt with ENT.
Got home from work last night & in the post was a copy letter from my onco to the consultant thyroid surgeon stating the module is Hypoechoic with irregular margins & contain small foci of internal microcalcificstion (U5 grade)

I’m going out out my mind as I can’t speak to anyone & going but what U5 means. It doesn’t sound great

Any reassurance or advise?

  • Hi

Welcome to the group. I’m sorry I don’t understand the grading of lumps but I’m sure someone on here will be able to advise. This should bump it up to the top again and hopefully someone will be able to help you.

  • Ultrasound is just the first step in determining whether you have cancer. U5 indicates there are signs that support that possibility.
If you didn't already have a fine needle aspiration, that will probably be the next step.

Analysis of that small sample will give the team more information to support a possible diagnosis.

It's not yet guaranteed, but the balance of probability probably lies towards you needing to have the lump removed - unless it's particularly small. There's a lot more 'watch and wait' going on these days. The docs will consider what's best for you and take your past cancer experience into consideration.

Try not to get too hung up on the medical terminology which really makes little sense to anybody who isn't an ultrasonographer.

The 'good news' (if I can call it that) is that thyroid cancer is almost always very treatable and probably quite a different experience to your breast cancer journey.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
