Hello all. I recently spotted a lump on my thyroid. Shortly afterwards I developed a sore throat. Really not sure how long I might have had the lump but think I can see it on photos going back a year or so… Have had fna which was Thy 4 so just waiting for results of biopsy. I’m really panicking as have read you only get symptoms once it’s advanced. Is this true? So scared

  • I can't really say that that is the case @Willowandpeeps that you only get symptoms once it's advanced, but try not to worry.  I had 2 FNAs done while having my Ultrasound, then also had a CT scan with contrast dye at another later appointment, and got a phone call the day after the CT scan bringing my appointment forward to a couple of days later, and immediately realised something was wrong.  That won't happen for everyone though, and plenty of people have benign nodules, so try not to panic, which is easier said than done I know from personal experience.  I went to the doctors more or less straight away after feeling the lump, also had a lump on a lymph node so got a quick appointment referral, but when I look back my voice had been hoarse for months before and I had put it down to my inhaler for Asthma, because that is one of the side effects.

  • Thanks for responding Petal66. I know I just need to stop googling and wait for the results. Finding it difficult to keep calm and carry on lol. I don’t really mind so much as long as it is still treatable. I have no idea how long I’ve had the lump, although I got an appointment as soon as I spotted it. My initial consultant rang to say from the look of the scan they’re probably going to want to remove the lump but he’s referred me to a thyroid specialist as he was head and neck. Apparently biopsy results are taking 2 or 3 weeks at the moment.

  • I think it was about 2/3 weeks before I found out, which was 2 days after the CT scan.  It is a worrying time, but you will be looked after no matter what the results.  I got to the point that I thought there is nothing I can do about this so I have to just get through whatever I have to, and the operation was fine.  No real pain just discomfort and a bit of a headache and sore throat from the anaesthetic.  I know we are told not to Google but to be honest I needed to know and even if I worried unnecessarily it armoured me with enough information to ask questions, but I still forgot to ask some things even then.  So as long as you are looking at legitimate sites I don't see a problem.  How long ago did you have your FNA?
