Thyroidectomy scar

Hi my name is Frances

I have just had two operations to remove a papillary thyroid cancer and now 12 week post operation. I just met with my oncologist for the first time this morning to discuss the next steps and I’m booked to get iodine radiotherapy at the end of June . Hopefully this is preventative as they think they have got all the cancer away but it’s all very unsettling although I’m lucky it could have been a lot worse.

I have booked a holiday abroad leaving in 2 weeks to get a break from hospitals and treatment before this next  round starts and I have a practical question to ask .
I know that I’ll need to keep my scar out of the sun on my neck while I’m away and I’ve bought a selection of scarves but I wondered if anyone has tried the silicone scar tape to cover their neck when swimming etc ? Has anyone tried it on their neck scar ?
I would appreciate advice from anyone who has had any experience of this ?

  • Hi Frances,

welcome to the forum and I am glad you found us Relaxed️ ️ Being diagnosed with cancer can be so scary and it’s completely normal to feel unsettled and grateful all at once. I hope your iodine treatment goes well for you.

I am about 3 months after surgery and started using silicone patches about 3 weeks ago. I also use silicone-based scar cream from Boots and swap between the two. From what I have read not all silicone patches offer protection from UV, so you would have to find a specific one that states that it offers protection from UV.

I have noticed my scar got a bit flatter since using silicone patches so I think they are a bit helpful but when I go out I use a lot of sun cream to protect my scar instead Relaxed️

Hope this helps. Have a lovely time away.
