Hi,
Im new here and just completely feeling confused, scared and worried.
My 10 year old daughter had an ultrasound on monday for a lump on her neck which doctor said was probably just a infected cyst.
Ultrasound showed it is a solid lump 1.6cm by 1.4cm that has a blood flow (not the words she used) so is not a cyst. They also found 'concerns' with her thyroid (covered in little white dots)
They have recommended she urgently has the whole lump removed and sent to the lab for testing. Within 28 hours ENT rang to say they want her in for an appointment on Wednesday to have a disscussion.
I am so scared and confused. The doctor rang be the evening of the ultrasound to see how we were and confirm that they are looking into things, one being cancer.
Does anybody have any experience with this?
I want to prepare myself for every potential outcome as everyone I have spoken to have been quite cryptic.
Please respond if you have had these experiences... even if its not what i want to hear.
Hi lanni.
we found a grape sized lump in my daughters neck a few months ago she had a slight cold so we thought just a swollen lymph node. Took her to the doctor to be sure and they said probably glandular fever! She had antibiotics. I wasn’t happy with that doctor she barley even wanted to touch the lump seemed to just want us out. We then went for a second opinion because the lump didn’t change at all. This doctor was immediately concerned she said it’s too hard and rubbery to be a normal lymph node. We had another long course of antibiotics while they did so many tests on her, bloods TB test. scans and more scans X-rays MRI’ and more bloods - nothing ever showed in bloods always said they were normal. And all this time our daughter had not one single symptom of illness so we convinced ourselves she was fine she couldn’t be sick. They did a biopsy of the lump - normal. Then they said we don’t know what this is we are referring her to a specialist hospital. Immediately they scanned her thyroid and said there is a mass/ tumour in there. So another biopsy this time of her thyroid- that came back normal. So they decided to remove the lymph node to get a definite answer. That then diagnosed it was papillary thyroid cancer with lymph node involvement. She was booked in 2 weeks later for full thyroidectomy and all the involved lymph nodes removing. Everything seemed to happen pretty fast from being sent to the hospital so we are still processing what has actually happened. We haven’t told my daughter what the reason for all this is we have just told her that her thyroid didn’t work and could make her very poorly we feel she’s too young to understand and will tell her when she is a bit older. (Not how everyone would deal with it but it’s right for us) this type of cancer is very treatable it’s hard to get your head round it because you obviously feel crushed and broken-hearted that it’s cancer but at the same time feel some happiness that it’s so very treatable.
I hope you get your results quickly and keep in touch even if it’s a different outcome it would be nice to hear from you.
x
Thank you so much for replying Lou.
Im so torn between convincing myself its all something far less serious and then being aware that there is quite clearly cause for concern.
I got told they are removing the whole lump instead of biopsy as they dont want to risk anything harmful spreading through her body (whatever thats meant to mean)
I dont even know who we are seeing on Wednesday, just got told its in the ENT department.
I know people say steer clear from good old Dr Google but as a parent, you just cant help but try and find the cause.
It sounds like you have been in a really full on whirlwind but its quite clear to see you have been so strong for your daughter and remain really positive.
How has she handled all the operations?
We did this a lot at first just trying to stay positive and not think the worst the emotions you are feeling right now I know are insane I hope you have someone close to talk with. not many people will understand the rollercoaster you are on - that’s why it’s nice to read peoples experiences and situations on here. And if you want to private msg me I am happy to chat privately too.
They told us they were going to remove the whole lump at first as biopsies can easily miss things because it takes such a small part,Then they did the biopsy instead which was a bit annoying really because had they just taken the whole lump straight away that would of been a lot less prodding and poking for her and would of diagnosed quicker but that’s in the past now. So it’s a good thing they are taking the whole thing the biopsy they took from my daughter came back normal ! It wasn’t untill they took the whole thing they found it- and she hated the biopsy.
she has hated all the poking and prodding she hates needles, blood tests the most
The lump removal was relatively simple she is such a brave girl and even after said I wasn’t really brave because I was asleep. The wound was very thin and very neat and started to heal in a matter of days. She was in hospital 3 days and once at home it was like nothing had happened. We got the results 1 week after that and we were kind of already prepared for what they said because my husband had googled sooooo much. The thyroidectomy was a bit more intense it took 9 hours which I wasn’t expecting and a day in ICU after but she has bounced right back and again she is just getting on with everything like nothing has happened. The wound is big but healing so fast and in time will no doubt look like a neck crease.
It’s so hard I know but your daughter is in the right hands and whatever the outcome you need to get to the bottom of it and get the correct treatment.
