Hi. I am reaching out for some support to help me through this anxious time. I went to the hospital this morning for an ultrasound after finding a lump on my thyroid. My blood tests were all fine.
The sonographer told me that there were 6 nodules and I need a biopsy. I didn't expect him to tell me there and then if I'm honest, which shocked me. The fact there are 6 scared me even more.
If anyone has any advice about how to deal with the anxiety of waiting, and the road ahead please can you reach out to me. I am so worried.
Thank you x
Hi Janet
I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this, it is an anxious time. I was in a similar situation to you back in 2017. I found comfort at that time through this forum and I hope you experience the same.
At the time of my scan my radiologist told me that he had found something that warranted further investigations, so I had a fine needle aspiration (biopsy). Can I reassure you that in my experience this test took hardly any time and i found it completely painless. Waiting times are difficult in the current climate so I hope that you have plenty of support around you.
My biopsy revealed that I had papillary cancer and I had to have half of my thyroid removed, but Janet not every nodule that is found is cancer.
My surgery was not difficult to overcome and in a few weeks i was back to my normal self. I realise that every experience is different, but for me I didn't feel unwell or have any significant pain.
Afterwards my life returned to normal and I could do everything that i could before.
You are absolutely right to feel scared, any kind of investigation or hearing the words 'nodule' or 'biopsy' is incredibly daunting.
I hope hearing my experience helps you in some way.
x
Hi Janet,
Im sorry to hear you are going through this, it is naturally an anxious time. The best thing I can suggest is to take each step as it comes. I found a secondary lump last July, had biopsies and scans, a total thyroidectomy and left neck dissection December 2020 and radioactive iodine in March. The surgery was much easier to recover from than I'd realised and you have so many people keeping a close eye on how things go. There is a wealth of experience and useful suggestions on here from people who are all at different stages. Best of luck for your journey
Jo :)
