Hello. My husband noticed something strange on my neck couple of months ago , i when to see GP , and I had scans done for head and neck and it came thyroid cancer, I am so so scared, and my surgery is with in the next four weeks, I don’t know how I feel any more, looks like live is not going to be the same .
Hi MRSVWOZ,
Same feeling here but thankfully we are not alone. I've had one surgery before the doctor found Follicular Thyroid Cancer and now I am going to get a second operation in 4 weeks to remove the other half of my thyroid hopefully to prevent returns. Good luck with your Op.
Stay strong!
Gianni.
Hi Mrs vwoz
If you're anything like me, We hear "cancer" and the mind goes into complete over drive, or mine did at least. I then went into a googling frenzy which was a terrible idea. I would recommend having a look at The Butterfly Trust. There's lots of stories form people that have recovered of their journey, contact information to reach out to former patients and also a 90minute video which goes through the treatment stages - very informative and may make you feel less worried. Do you know what type of thyroid cancer?
There is a positive here, having found the cancer during the scans and testing means that the surgeon can remove what he can see in one operation. For people whose biopsies are inconclusive and it just "might be" cancer, they have to have half the thyroid removed, then that goes for testing and if its positive they have to have a secondary operation. Lots more waiting etc.
I was in the same position as you (I'm 2wks post total thyroidectomy and neck dissection) and have found the mental anxiety side far harder than the physical side. Many people do get life back to normal afterwards which can be really reassuring when you're just starting off your journey. If you want to ask any questions, feel free and I can share my experience so far. You're not alone xx
Thanks for your information is so great to se , I am not the only person. And yes is scary when you hear cancer is quite shocking. And wary after surgery, how quickly I will recover, as I am so active person all this years, I am age 38 , having too kids age 11 starting secondary school and age 9 . Thanks
That is really good you have a date to work to. Are you having any lymph nodes out?
Everyone is different with recovery times, but I was out for walks a few days after my op - nothing too strenuous, but by no means bed bound. It's just good to give all the scar tissue time to heal no matter how neat it looks on the outside, there's lots that's gone on inside. Find some good boxsets on Netflix that you can just have on in the background and doze in and out of.
Hi Gianni thank you , and I hope you getting well from your surgery, I will have my next week, I am quite worried and scared, but we have to stay strong. Lots of love
