Hi everyone

after googling for ever, I wanted to find somewhere I can read about other people’s experiences and gather some information.
a little bit about myself; I’m 50 year old married with 2 grown up children (and a grandson on the way !). I have had a multinodular goitre for just over 20 years after having my daughter. A year ago (2020)  I noticed a change and felt like something wasn’t right. My GP referred me to an ENT doctor and a year later I had my appointment. He then ordered an ultrasound, which I had 10 days ago and am awaiting results. I have had pain in my neck and throat, earache and pressure on my windpipe, especially when lying down and walking uphill. I’m now struggling through my days and exhausted. I can’t get cancer out of my mind and find myself always googling about it. It’s not an easy condition to live with as I’ve only ever had “your blood levels are normal “. My goitre is visible and now uncomfortable. I haven’t really spoken to anyone as I cope better on my own and don’t want to freak the family out.
thank you for listening and wishing you all well. X

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

Waiting for results, as you know, can be extremely stressful. Were you given a timescale for when you should receive them? My best bit of advice would be to keep busy, preferably doing things you enjoy, to keep your mind off the 'what ifs'. You might also like to have a look at the suggestions here in 'how to ease worry when waiting for medical test results'.

I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet so I typed 'multinodular goitre' into the search bar at the top of the page and found these previous posts which mention it. You could have a read through them and respond to any of the more recent posts if you think the poster might be able to help you further.

I'll be keeping everything crossed that nothing cancerous is found

  • The vast majority of thyroid lumps are NOT cancer. I would strongly advise you not to read up on thyroid cancer at this stage when you are a very long way from any kind of diagnosis. You'll only worry yourself and the (mostly) good news that thyroid cancers are (mostly) very treatable won't sink in if you're fretting about whether that's what you've got.

There are many different things that can cause these lumps. Hopefully, the ultrasound will help to narrow down the possibilities. IF the Ultrasound indicates a need for further investigation, the next step would typically be a fine needle biopsy. Even that isn't extremely accurate and some quite common types of TC can't be diagnosed from a few cells.

There's a long way to go.

You will want to be rid of that lump, whether it's cancer or not. I'm sure your doctors will talk you through all the options around that.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
