Hello all, I’ve been diagnosed with Papillory thyroid cancer, it was caught early so only a small tumour (1.3mm). The consultant wants to remove half my thyroid and has said that they will then test the removed half, if that shows anything then I have to go back in for the rest removing, and I will then have to have annual scans on the remaining half. The thing is if my body can go wrong it usually does. This will be my 13th surgery for various different things. I have said that I would prefer my whole thyroid removing rather than risk that I may have to go back in for the other half removing after they test it, or the risk that the cancer may come back in the other half. Has anyone else made this decision? I already take daily medication, how difficult is it to get your thyroxine levels right with medication please? I’m 42 if that helps. Thank you
Hi DeeC
Im sorry to hear that you are going through this. I found myself in a very similar situation 3 years ago aged 44. It was discovered that I had a 1.9mm tumour in my thyroid. I was advised to have the half removed which I did, the operation was really straightforward and I felt fine soon afterwards, I didn't need to take any thyroxine after this surgery.
In March this year after being monitored regularly I had surgery to remove the remainder of my thyroid after a new tumour was discovered. I am glad that my treatment took this course, I had 3 drug free years feeling really well. I am now on thyroxine and haven't had any issues at all.
Obviously I can only comment on my treatment journey, but despite needing further surgery 3 years later I am comfortable with the decisions I made at the time.
I wish you lots of luck in making the decision that feels right for you.
Thank you so much for replying. I had to let my surgeon know my decision so she could plan for the time required. I’ve decided to have my whole thyroid removed. I’m hoping that I’ll get my levels of thyroxine sorted as quickly as I did HRT. Hope that’s the last surgery you have and that you continue being well. Take care
