Hello, I just had a diagnosis of a thyroid cancer yesterday. They said it is very treatable and that it hasn’t spread so I’m grateful for that. It is in one small nodule that is less than 2 cm. They are going to remove my whole thyroid and my pre-assessment is on Tues. I’ve already got another surgery booked under Gynae on Saturday 10th April, so it’s going to be a lot at once if the thyroid surgery is soon after. So concerned about how I will cope with it all and especially what it be like after the thyroid surgery. Talking, swallowing, pain, breathing etc. Trying to keep positive though it is scary.
Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to read about your thyroid cancer diagnosis. Although I didn't have the same type of cancer as you I know what a worrying time this can be.
You can take the opportunity when you have your pre-assessment tomorrow to ask all your questions about swallowing, etc. As part of the assessment they should tell you what to expect and how to look after yourself.
Hope everything goes well.

Hi Latchbrook, thank you. I do have some questions ready for the pre-assessment so hopefully that will help. x
Hi ,
As awful as it is with a caner diagnosis, it's good to hear that it's a small nodule and that it hasn't spread!
I had a partial thyroidectomy in October last year and now 3 weeks after my completion thyroidectomy. After the surgeries I had only slight pain in my neck, I was able to eat solid food and drink once I got back on the ward after the surgery, although I used a straw to drink for a few days, I couldn't swallow the same amount of liquid as I could before, and i chewed my food a bit more before swallowing it. I found when I sneezed it hurt my neck a bit, but nothing major at all. For the first couple of days after the surgery I could talk fine, but my voice got tired quicker quicker normal, so if I had been talking for maybe an hour or so, I'd need to stay quiet for a while to let it rest. Sleeping was OK too, although I needed to sleep with 2 pillows for a few days after to keep my neck propped up. I've heard some people say a V pillow is great after thyroid surgery but I never used one. About 2 and a half weeks after my completion surgery I was back doing exercise classes and running. I needed more rest after doing exercise than normal, but was pretty much back to normal very quickly.
Hope this helps in knowing what to expect, I've found this forum great for getting answers to questions you might have!

Hi Kathryn
Thanks very much for your reply. What you have said is reassuring.
I hope they managed to completely cure your cancer. Did you need any iodine treatment?
Best wishes x
I got the all clear a week ago today! they didn't find any cancer in the 2nd half of my thyroid, but the first nodule they removed last year was over 4cm so they said I'm on the borderline of needing RAI or not, but at the minute we're not going to do it.
X
It’s very good news you got the all clear
