Hi everyone, this is my first time joining a discussion group so all new to me! I’m having RAI next week and was just wondering what to expect..as in how will I feel during and after treatment? Also I was told I will be in hospital from Tuesday til Friday and can then go home, but will have to be careful especially around my children..social distancing, no hugging etc which I will find very difficult. I was surprised as I was expecting to have to stay away for up to 2 weeks. I’m considering staying somewhere else for a few days before I go home just to be on the safe side....just wondering what other peoples experiences have been with RAI...?
I had my RAI at the start of the month and had thyrogen injections on the two days prior to RAI. I had no issues with the Thyrogen. My RAI was in capsule form and 30 minutes after taking it I was asked to lie flat out on the bed so the first reading could be taken. I took in enough reading material and watched a fair bit of TV. Nurses will not be able to spend much time in your room. Make sure you drink plenty fluids as most of the radioactivity will leave you in your urine. I had two showers each day for the first 5 days. I received a low dose of RAI and after a scan on day 2 and was able to return home to my wife. I was not able to get close to my young grandchildren till day 6 and before that slept in a separate bed, used a separate toilet and maintained an arms length distance from my wife. Apart from a couple of days of my throat feeling a bit tight I have had no side effects to date. I would say that the anxiety ahead of the treatment was worse than the treatment. I wish you all the best with your treatment.
Hi OMC
I had my RAI in July, this forum helped me as one lady said that the room would have lots of polythene protection on the floor and on other bits in the room. My tv did not work so I would load netflix on an ipad if you can. I took books and knitting, they measured my knitting for me when I left. My phone and ipad had protective film put on them. Take lemon sherbert boiled sweets to suck or anything sour to make your salivary glands work. I swallowed the capsule but had a bit of water first in case it got stuck, the thought of it was worse than the swallowing. I had to then stand against the back wall of the room whilst they measured the levels of radioactivity from the room door with the geiger counter machine. I drank several jugs of water each day and showered twice, the toilet has to be flushed twice. I did take a cool bag with food as there was a little fridge in the ante bit of the room, there is normally a screen thing that the nurses/doctors cannot go past but you have a call button in the room. I had to wash up the crockery. It passed quite quickly, I went in on a Tuesday and left on the Thursday afternoon after a scan and when my levels had reduced to enable me to go home safely. I sat in the back of the car and used a separate bathroom for a week. I did not see any young children for about 3 weeks and my two year old granddaughter for a month. I did not really have any side effects apart from being more tired for a couple of weeks.
Good luck with your treatment, hope it soon passes.
Hello
I was just wondering how you got on?
My treatment is in a few weeks and I too have young children so feeling very apprehensive about that side of it.
I had planned to stay with my parents afterwards but having read some of the comments am worrying about bathrooms, cutlery etc and thinking it would actually be easier at home where I can be more in control.

Hi, I had my Rai begining of sept and had a medium dose. I only stayed in 2 nights and when i came home my dr told me that I could be careful for a day or 2 with things like being near my 19 year old and flushing the loo twice ect but that he wasn't too worried because my levels were low enough. x
Hello, I was reading the forum and wondered how your RAI went and how long you had to stay away from your children for. I am going in on Monday and have two young children (1 year old and a 3 year old) I am also going to stay with my parents. I wondered how long did you have to isolate for?
