Use of statins after thyroid removal

Hi everyone,

I I would really appreciate hearing if anyone has had to take statins after having had thyroid  removed. I had mine removed a year ago and also had my gallbladder removed recently. I’ve been advised to take statins due to high cholesterol but I’m so scared to take them. I have read a lot and the side effects re muscle pain and potential liver damage have frightened me so much. I’ve tried  so hard to reduce cholesterol with diet and exercise but I haven’t been successful. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has any experience with statins.

Thank you so much x

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

Having searched the group for previous posts which mention statins the only one I can found is this one which you started 5 months ago. However, you did get replies so you might want to have another look.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi there,

I have been on statins for about 7 years only low dose. It’s difficult to know if I have any side effects due to menopause and treatment for thyroid cancer last year.
sometimes diet alone cannot reduce your levels.
Discuss with your GP or if you have a pharmacist at your practice they are very knowledgeable about side effects. We are all different and it’s always weighing up the risk factors and health history and your cardiac risk versus any side effects.

statins have been shown recently and reported in the news to be very effective in preventing heart disease and stroke.

I would discuss further with a health professional. I think having cancer can make you feel that you don’t have any control over your health. It’s always good to question professionals and make an informed decision.

Good luck with that. My liver function hasn’t been affected and I have yearly bloods done now. I think that they do them more frequently in the first year. I hope that helps a little?

  • Thanks so much for your reply which is really helpful.  I’ve booked an appointmenT to talk things through but I think it’s the thought of muscle damage that’s made me fearful as I seem to be a person who gets the listed side effects whenever I get a new med!! It’s comforting to hear you are tolerating them so that’s encouraging to hear

    thanks so much
