Calcium after Thyroidectomy

Hi, just looking for some advice!

I had a thyroid completion on Tuesday and since then my calcium levels have continued to drop daily despite being prescribed Calcium and Vitamin D. Daily these supplements have been increased but my level continues to drop. It is currently at 1.91 and my PTH at under 0.4.

In anyone’s experience did the supplements eventually kickstart their PTH and subsequently their calcium levels? I’m stuck in hospital and constantly being told incorrect information so thought I would come here for some helpful advice.

thanks in advance

Hayley

  • How long after you left hospital did you have calcium bloods checked. They gave me 28 day course and gp to review. Doctor surgery never got back to me after contacting them. I put  in prescription and they prescribed them. I do have a ent check up on 22nd so I guess I carry on taking them until then.

  • I had them checked a week after I was discharged and from there on every 2 weeks. I was told in hospital I would need them checked regularly but upon leaving there was no notes stating this so it had been a battle to get blood forms etc. Your consultant is a better bet than the GP I think.

  • They just told me in hospital to come a few days after discharge which I did and just says gp to review. Not long until my appointment with consultant. Thanks for the reply.  I don't think 6 weeks on  calcium tablets should do any harm.

  • Oh ok yeah I think as long as your calcium is stable they don’t seem too concerned! No that’s true it’s just a supplement really at the end of the day. I hope all goes well with your recovery. All the best!

  • Hi are you still on calcium tablets. Looks like I will be continuing to take them as just saw my results calcium 2.44 and parathyroid only 0.9. Ent consultant is caling me tomorrow. I did have good news last week i don't need any treatment for the cancer.

  • Hi! Yes I’m still on mine. Funnily enough my last readings 2 weeks ago for both my calcium and PTH were exactly the same as yours but I’ve heard nothing back regarding them so at least your ENT consultant is contacting you.
That’s great news regarding no further treatment! I’ve got my radioactive iodine tomorrow and then hoping that will be it all over with for me too! Fingers crossed

  • I hope your iodine treatment goes well. My results for blood test were still pending at my appointment so that's why his calling me. I don't think they done the thyroid function blood tests as I can't see results.

  • Thank you. Oh right ok, hopefully he can shed some light on what happens next! I’m sure they will redo the thyroid function if it’s not been done! Good luck with your call x

  • Hi how are you getting on. Are you still on the calcium. I'm still on calcium. Had a dose reduction last week take 3 instead of 4 now. My parathyroid was even lower at less than 0.7 but calcium is fine. Thyroid just in normal range. Got more blood test in a couple of weeks.

  • Hi! That’s frustrating but my consultant told me that sometimes lowering the calcium can help try and kickstart the PTH so maybe that will eventually happen to yours, not that it’s made any difference to mine. Mine had increased slightly to 1.3 and still on the same dose of calcium and vitamin D.

My readings have been all over the place though and did stay at 0.8 for months! I’m due to see my consultant in 2 weeks so hoping he will shed more light then!Fingers crossed
