Hi,
I've recently been diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer after having a hemi on the right side to remove a 2.4mm by 2.1mm Thy3f nodule.
I am now due to have a TT and possibly need RAI after that.
I instantly asked about the effect on my fertility with both the removal and more so the RAI. I was told it would not effect it.
But as the weeks have gone by, I have come across more information regarding it making women infertile. I already have PCOS, I am 33 and did plan to start trying for a baby next year. This is causing me great stress and worry, as all I want in my life is to be a Mum.
Has anyone got any advice or experiences on this please, whether they have been advised anything differently by their surgeon as well.
I'm hoping to call my Cancer nurse tomorrow and try get refereed to a fertility specialist.
Thank.you for any advice on this.
Hello Safc1990
Welcome to the Online Community. I hope you do not mind me responding as I had a different type of cancer to you but by doing so hopefully it will bump your post and someone will see it.
I am sorry that you have had a diagnosis of follicular thyroid cancer and I can remember what a worrying time it is to have a cancer diagnosis. Mine was back in 2022.
I completely understand your concerns about your fertility being affected by possible treatments and this is something that is important for you to have more information on before your treatment starts.
Calling your CNS and talking about your fertility and the impact of your treatments is a very good idea and hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance and also the full facts so you can make informed decisions about your treatment. I was lucky in that I was already a Mum when I had my cancer diagnosis and this is something you do need to talk through with someone who knows your medical history re PCOS, your diagnosis and the impact of the treatments and whether there are alternatives.
I hope that you have some answers soon and I wish you well with your treatment. In the meantime if there is anything else you need please do ask. We also have a Support Line that you are welcome to call if you would like to talk through your fertility worries with one of the nurses or just for some general support. The number is below and they are lovely on there.

Hi,
I know this is an old post but I just wanted to say I have had 4 doses of RAI over the years, the most recent was in 2017. I naturally got pregnant at 37 years old in 2019 and now have a 4 year old daughter!
I have papillary carcinoma so not sure if your dose of RAI will be different but I just thought it might reassure you that 4 rounds of the stuff didn't make me infertile!
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
