Hi I’m new to the group, I had a total thyroidectomy on 18th May for Graves’ disease. I had a little bit of vocal paralysis.Recovered well and went for post op follow up a week ago to be told that when they sent my thyroid of histology they found a 2.7mm papillary thyroid cancer. I was told that it had been removed and that I did not require any further treatment or follow up and I was being discharged from his care. I felt like I had been hit by a bus!!
I’m trying not to think of all the what ifs and trying to get my head round it all. I’m hoping by being on this forum it will help me to achieve this and help me process that I had cancer and I am now cancer free.
Has anyone else had a smiliar experience to me?
Look forward to hearing from you
Thanks xx
Nice to know I’m not the only newbie Here if you need me and all the best on your journey x
It might not match how you are feeling right now but I would say you are extraordinarily lucky to have an operation that found an unexpected tumour. You will already have adapted to the idea of life without a thyroid, and if your Graves was bad enough to need a thyroidectomy, I'm going to predict that life without it will be a lot better than life was with it,
Hopefully you won't need us much but you're very welcome. Try not to read up about things you won't need to go through that might seem scary and feel free to ask any questions you have now or in the future.
Best wishes
Barbara

Thank you and yes I’m very lucky and very fortunate for it to have been found when it did but still a massive shock as was not expecting it at all. I’m feeling better from my Graves thanks. Just need to get my head round it all!! You never think it’s going to be you who is affected with cancer. I think because I was told and the surgeon discharged me and I don’t need any follow up I suppose I feel abit abandoned and what do I do now.I spoke to an advisor on the phone from Macmillan last week and they suggested joining the online community. Thanks for your reply and words of advice it’s much appreciated. x
Hi Sidney,
I was given full thyroidectomy and left and forgotten about for 7months to then be told they found papillary cancer and mets in nodules. I have been given a blood test to check thyroglobulin levels which will tell them if there is still cancer in the body.
what I don’t understand about yours and my situation is; why have they discharged and left you when others on this forum that have same diagnosis are being offered Radio iodine treatment and some have even have the support of Macmillan nurse I just don’t understand.
maybe it’s because they see us as having the ‘good cancer’
Sidney they should still be monitoring you every 6months just to make sure it doesn’t return. Let me know how things go
