Hi,

We met the oncologist today in Oxford. We understood from him that there is a shortage of supply for Radio active Iodine capsule in UK/Europe. Hence , they were not able to give us a date for the treatment. there could be a delay of 2months or so. Did anyone face the same issue? Thanks

My TT was in September so I am getting anxious now by how big a gap there is going to be before I receive my RAI

  • Hello and . Earlier this afternoon, I got in touch with Kate Farnell at Butterfly TC Trust about the shortage.

She told me: "Barbara,we are totally back on track in Newcastle now ,there has been a shortage but hopefully things are getting back to normal now "

I hope this means you'll all soon be able to get your iodine.

    Best wishes

    Barbara

Morning. I am based in Hertfordshire and spoke this morning to Mount Vernon hospital who mentioned the shortage. They told me they are hoping to have some Radioactive Iodine capsules back at the end of April / May time.

    Hi ZS1,

I was in oxford Thursday last week to book in my 4th RAI, but unfortunately was told that is a worldwide shortage and not sure when they will have it again.

I was told in my appointment that they have no capsule this month, they have 1 capsule for someone next month and not sure when they will get more coming in.  I was also told I'm on a waiting list, but not the first on that list.

Slightly worried because between the time I had surgery to remove my thyroid and me falling pregnant and having a baby the cancer spread to my lymph nodes and lungs. Worried it will spread while waiting for my last round of treatment.

    Stay strong!

Thanks Lulu18. sorry to hear about your metastasis. There are reasons to be worried if anyone falls into high risk category (metastasis regional/distant, lymph node involvement, big tumour size, poorly differentiated, Vascular invasions with 4 vessels or more etc.). my suggestion would be to share your concern with oncologist and request for a earlier date if possible. also its worth to try for other options (private) as well if financially feasible for you.. I was even looking at outside UK (Germany/Turkey). Turkey medical treatment is much cheaper (around 4200 USD) for RAI treatment...in Germany/UK, its close to 10K GBP...difficult situation as Radio iodine capsule shortage is across the globe....Best wishes for your recovery.
