Hi everyone, I’m new to the group. I’ve just received a diagnosis for an FNA I had about 6 weeks ago. I was supposed to have a follow up appointment but it was cancelled because of covid-19 which totally understand. I’ve received a letter saying I have THY3a and I will be called back in 6 months for another FNA. I just wondered if anyone with the same diagnosis has problems with swallowing My food often gets stuck and a couple of weeks ago I passed out momentarily when my food wouldn’t go down.
Hi there
Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you need to be here!
The Thy3 rating you've been given just means that there weren't enough cells in the sample they took, to be able to say one way or another what the lump is. So they wait for 6 months to allow things to heal and the blood and damaged cells from the initial FNA to clear away, and then they will try again and do another FNA and hope to get enough cells to say for sure what is going on inside the lump.
Just as a head's up, if it comes back again as another 3, then they may suggest a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy. This is where they will remove the half of the thyroid that has the lump on/in it and then put slices of the whole under the microscope to see what's going on.
However, I would def tell the doctors that your lump is causing you swallowing issues, if you haven't already. It could be that it is continuing to grow, so pushing on your oesophagus and stopping food from moving down normally. In the meantime, smaller bites of wetter food will help as it's less to travel down what sounds like a restricted food. So gravy and custard to the rescue!
Please do shout up anytime and for anything, we're always here!
