Thyroidectomy Scar and Croaky voice

Hi All,

Was looking for a bit of advice regarding my scar and to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I’m 9 months post op (I had two procedures to remove my thyroid) and whilst my scar has healed, it is still quite swollen above. I have been using bio oil but the swelling is awful and I’m beginning to think it’s scar tissue due to having two operations. My neck still feels tight and I was hoping I’d just have a faint scar line by now.

Also does anyone find that if you’re feeling tired, does your voice get weaker? My voice seems to be croaky sometimes and fine at other times.

Thanks x

  • Hi Becs327,

Sorry you have these problems post surgery. If I were you I would contact your CNS/consultant and ask to be seen. Did you have any lymph nodes removed? Is the swelling on the scar itself or above on your neck? If it is, it could be lymphoedema and your CNS or consultant should point you to a good lymphoedema practitioner. I was told by my consultant that the massage I should do on my scar must be extremely vigorous to prevent scar tissue.

Re the croaky voice I would get them to check your vocal chords aswell. These can often be affected during this surgery. You should get a throat scope and they ask you to say “ahhh” so they can see the vocal chords move.

I wish you all the best x
