I'm so sorry that after suggesting that you post your question here it still remains unanswered. This is very unusual as the thyroid group members are usually very quick to reply.

I know that trying to get information can be very worrying and the waiting sets the mind on fire with lots of what if's, if you could give the members a little bit longer I'm sure you'll get an answer soon, in the meantime by me answering your post it has brought it back to nearer the top and may catch someone's attention.

We have a telephone support line on 0808 808 0000 open 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday that you could try, it may be possible that you could speak to one of our nurses, but as I'm sure that you'll appreciate at this  time waiting time to be connected could be extended but if you hang in there and you can speak to a nurse it will be worthwhile.

  • Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you need to be here.

First off, stop Googling. Very few people find out anything useful when it comes to medical problems, tests, etc by Googling, but they do find out a lot of rubbish or things that scare them.

At this moment in time, no, you do not have a cancer diagnosis. What you have is a suspicious nodule, which is very common, and over 90% of them come back as benign. T1 is the FNA result, and this means that the sample they took wasn't a good one. There weren't enough whole cells in the sample to see what's going on. Usually, they'd leave you for anywhere between a few weeks and a few months and then do the FNA again to try and get a better sample. The time scale seems to vary between doctors, but a few months is better imo because it allows time for the dead cells and clots to be cleared away from the first FNA before they try again, so it raises the chances of getting a better sample.

U5 is the ultrasound rating the lump was given. Tbh, the ultrasound rating is mostly used to determine if you get an FNA or not. So once it's been determined that an FNA is required, then the U rating becomes redundant.

    Hope that helps!

There had only been 2 posts since the initial post, it was pretty much at 'the top' already had you looked. I had been planning on getting round to trying to reply to everything today as I've had a lot going on personally that's made it difficult to concentrate. Which is why posts have been sitting longer than usual. So thanks for nagging me to get on to it and pointing out I've been rubbish.....

I have no medical training, everything I post is an opinion or educated guess. It is not medical advice.

Thought it was strange that you had not replied.

I only gave it a little jolt as I had signposted into thyroid.

Never believed for a moment that you were rubbish and certainly no nagging involved.

Thanks for, hopefully, putting her mind at rest.

    Wishing you well Loppyleo.

Lass is right about the googling! I spent weeks while waiting for news reading everything I could, and terrifying myself!
