Hello
I’m just looking for advice as to what’s normal after a Hemi thyroidectomy. I had my op on Thursday and was allowed home later that day, but the whole back of my head and from my ears down on my face is still numb. I can feel when I touch it but it’s a very strange sensation and I just wondered if this was normal. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated, thank you
Hey there Nic,
Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you need to be here.
From your description, it sounds like during the operation they've bruised or damaged one or more of the nerves running up through your neck.
It's not a normal side effect, as they normally manage to avoid the nerves. So if you see no improvement by the end of the week, or if things get worse, then I'd call the GP for an appointment and see what they say.
Good luck, and let us know how you go!
Lass
Xx

Hi, just wanted to say I'm 4 weeks post hemithyroidectomy and mines the same. I did think it was pretty normal as my c section scar has the same issue above the incision their ( I never got feeling back there). Mine starts along my jawbone down though, my incision is pretty low down because they need to get to my collar bone.
