Hi I stopped calcium tablets 5 weeks ago but have not had a blood test since they were stopped, I'm going to have surgery for ovarian cyst. Does anyone know if a blood test should be done after stopping them last blood test parathyroid went back to normal range just at 2. I'm going to ask gp next week. I just wondered if anyone had blood test when they stopped calcium.

  • If you have survived 5 weeks without getting tingles, then you probably don't need a test.
But, maybe you can ask for calcium to be included with your next thyroid function test.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for the reply, I have asked the doctors, just waiting on someone to call. Its good to know my calcium probably OK. I have had couple of twitches in leg but only when sitting on bed, not sure if that's to do with calcium.

  • Hey, I struggle with my calcium and my surgeon is having a three month check up with me about my calcium because I experience symptoms of hypocalcemia. If you don't experience any symptoms and don't bring it up you won't have the tests done as they won't see a need.

At my three month appointment that's the point where you get referred to endocrinology as you're then considered long term for hypocalcemia. After the 5 weeks you may be back to normal for your glands it depends on personal circumstances Blush

  • Hi GP requested my bloods today and I got blood test this afternoon. It seems you have to ask otherwise you don't get.  I had to remind GP surgery of my enconsult. I think it's probably ok but I get a twitch every now and then in my thigh , not sure if that's anything to do with calcium. At least it's being checked before my surgery, fingers cross it's ok. I was worried because someone who had thyroidectomy came of calcium then there parathyroid went back down again.

  • Honestly that's what happened to me, my levels went down after three days off the tablets and haven't recovered. But without going back into hospital on an IV I'm at this level. My GP did my bloods Sweat smileo weeks ago so I know my calcium is low but they haven't got in contact because it's borderline and I'm already waiting for the referral Sweat smile so much chasing around for simple things I've found

  • You would of thought they would have gave me a blood test a few weeks after coming of them to be on safe side. You can have low calcium with no symptoms as when mine was low after surgery I had no symptoms. Is twitching a symptom of low calcium. I did read levothyroxine can cause twitching.

  • Had calcium blood results back and adjusted calcium is 2.15 gp just put on nhs app results and borderline and no further action. You would of thought they would discuss it with me. My ovarian cyst surgery went well, just recovering now. So ig guess I just tell gp if I get any symptoms, I guess borderline not a concern.

  • Hey, I'm glad you cyst surgery went well. My recent calcium levels came back at 2.02 while still taking the calvive tablets twice a day still. I was told to stop taking them even though I'm having symptoms and still so low. Honestly stuck for words but I'm at the Christies in 2 weeks for my first appointment there so hoping they can help. Sweat smile They don't make it easy for us

  • I'm not on any tablets, you would of thought they would recheck in a couple of months or check the parathyroid. I have review in September for levothyroxine so I'll ask then unless I get any symptoms. Hope your appointment goes OK.
