I've been on thyroxine now for ten months, and I just feel completely pants. My mood has slowly been getting lower and lower, despite an early reduction in meds (and two increases in the antidepressants I was already on!).
Now, I know depression - I'm a lifetime subscriber - and this feels... different. There's none of the emotional upheaval: it just feels as though I'm underpowered. As though it's my brain, rather than my mind, if that makes sense.
Is it just me, or has anyone else found themselves in this same boat?
Thanks,
L.
Heya Elle,
So, the thyroid is well known to be a key part of your moods. So often after a TT, people do find that their moods can go a little bit haywire. Anti-depressants can work for some people, but it doesn't sound like they've improved things for you. Has your doctor considered trying different types?
The other thing is that your vitamins and minerals can sometimes go a bit skew whiff which also affects mood. Has your doctor run a full panel to make sure all your levels of everything are optimal?
Then finally, chemically wise, is your thyroxine. Are all your levels OK there? Is there room so they could they be increased to give you a bit more oompff?
The other thing to consider is the emotional and mental side of things. Being given a cancer diagnosis can do funny things to your head, even totally unbeknown to us. Have you a professional that you can talk to about what it all means for you now and going forward? Give your head a bit of a spring clean as it were.
I hope something there helps.

Just wanted to say that thyroxine has such a bearing on feelings of depression. When my dosage was too low I felt horrific! Pretty much suicidal!! Suicidal ideation all the time. Really.. it was awful. Luckily I knew this was the thyroxine levels as I hadn’t felt like this before so it was easy to see what was going on. They bumped my dose right up and the depression lifted.
Recently they changed my brand of levothyroxine to TEVA brand and the depression swept back in. Again I knew it wasn’t right and the change of brand was the only change. I demanded it was swapped from TEVA and again the depression lifted.
Apparently a lot of people have problems with TEVA brand so maybe check what you are on. I am on avantis and Wockhardt now and feel fine again
just wanted to demonstrate what a crazy affect thyroxine has on depression. I don’t think the doctors explain enough how much it effects mental state. It’s also difficult to unpick what is going on if you have depression before. I hope you can get them to look at it and work out what can be tweaked to get you to a better place. Maybe trying. Different brand of thyroxine or looking at your levels.
stay strong. It takes a while to get back to a good place but you will get there. Sending you love and hugs xxx
