I had my thyroid removed in 2016 due to papillary cancer. My Thyroglobulin levels have been slowly increasing since 2017. I had a spot on my lung which has increased from 3mm to 6mm. My doctor thinks this is metastasis and not lung cancer. I have to go back in September for more blood results and to hear the outcome of the multi team meeting involving the lung cancer team. Has anyone else gone through this and what can I expect. After losing my sister to ovarian cancer last year I am very worried. Thank you.
Hi BarbieAnne
The waiting and the uncertainty are terrible, aren't they? But it sounds like your team are on top of this.
I just want to say one thing - EVEN if this is metastatic thyroid cancer in your lung, it's not as serious as 'real' lung cancer (by which I mean a cancer that starts independently in the lung and is not related to the thyroid cancer), and it's nothing at all like ovarian cancer.
When you've lost somebody you love to cancer, it's easy to let your fears and your imagination run riot and to think the worst. This may be nothing or it may mean you need more Radioactive iodine but you're not going to die anytime soon.
When I was diagnosed 8.5 years ago, my neighbour had a friend whose lungs were absolutely riddled with metastatic thyroid cancer. Every few years they give her a blast of RAI and as far as I know, she's still chugging along nearly 15 years after first diagnosis - and that was with extensive mets in her lungs.
The thing that makes thyroid cancer so treatable - even when it spreads - is the magical power of radioactive iodine. Metastatic thyroid cancers still behave like thyroid cancers, just in different parts of the body. And those metastatic cancers generally react to radioactive iodine, suck it up, and get killed or controlled by iodine treatment.
Could you tell us how the doctors found your 6 mm spot?
It's natural to be worried, especially if you've started to think after 3 years that you're in the clear, but the MDT will come up with a plan for you and get this little spot zapped soon, I'm sure.
Best wishes
Barbara

Hi. My lung nodule showed up in my original scan after my operation and RAI. My oncologist at the time didn't think it was anything. As my recent blood test suggested levels were creeping up I was sent for another scan where the nodule was found to be doubled in size.

Hey Barbie,
Have you heard anything back from your doctors yet or is it still September they're waiting for?
How are you feeling?
