Critical Illness Definition and Pre-existing Conditions / Related Conditions for Claim

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with a PT1, 3.6cm classical seminoma, confined to testicle, no retis invasion etc, at the start of December 2024, further to an orchiectomy of my leftie. No raised blood markers, clear CT scan, oncologist has recommended surveillance only (I am torn about electing for a dose of Carbo, but that's another thread!).

I have recently submitted a claim on my employer's group critical policy (with Canada Life), which I have been signed up to for the last 18 months. It has the usual definition about malignant tumour with invasion of tissue etc.

My two questions are these:

1. Does a PT1 seminoma count as invasion of tissue give it grew to 3.6cm, despite not spreading/invading adjacent tissue, structures, elsewhere.

2. My leftie was originally undescended and was fixed by an orchidopexy when I was a baby. Leftie was always smaller than the other, albeit seemed to function healthily and never caused me any issues. Doed anyone have experience of their claim being denied for such a history given technically an undescended testicle carries hogher risk of cancer later i life apparently.

Wondering if they will try to wiggle out of my claim given I had this 'condition' well before entering the policy (there was no medical or declaration to make when I joined the policy).

Keen to hear any views.

Thanks and wishing all on here the healthiest 2025 possible.

  • Hello

I am Brian one of the Community Champions here at Macmillan. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered and although I can't answer it (I have a different cancer) by me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of the group and hopefully be seen and answered by other members of the testicular group.

Having read your post a couple of times here's a couple of suggestions-

    * Would your oncologist be able to give you an answer.

    * Would one of our Specialist Cancer Nurses be able to answer your question - here's a link to them - Ask a Nurse.

I do hope you get some answers. If I can do anything else for you please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks for your guidance Brian, much appreciated.

Yes, would be good to know of others' experiences on here on this type of thing but in the meantime I will query things per your guidance, which are great ideas. Thanks again.

Hope your own cancer journey is going in the right direction and wishing you all the best.

    DS.

  • Hello

It's no problem we're happy to help. I am technically "cancer free" but let's see where we go at my next PSA test - you never know in this game!!

On the Community we encourage members to put their personal journey in their profile, it has two benefits, it helps folk know what's wrong with you and how they can help and also it's a reminder of where you've been. You can read anyone's profile (providing it's been done) by clicking on their user name or avatar.

To update your profile on your home page click on the chair - top right, then profile and then edit. Once you have written something remember to save it.

    Anything else just ask.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Firstly I’m no doctor and as you already appreciate the devil is in the detail regarding any type of insurance claim however if you look at it this way regarding tissue invasion the sheer fact that you had your testicle removed proves that if you not had it removed it would have gone on to spread and eventually cause death makes it a critical illness and as long as the policy includes tc cancer I’m confident your claim will be successful good luck in the future

  • Hi,

I also had a PT1 seminoma- no spread/ invasion elsewhere and clear bloods like yourself. I was paid out under my insurers (not the same as yours) critical illness policy without any issues.

    All the best
