Returning to work

I had an orchidectomy at the end of feb, after which I opted for surveillance over one dose of carboplatin (on recommendation of 2 consultants). The surgery was straightforward enough, although fairly unpleasant hematoma and weird infection in remaining testicle combined with extraordinary allergic reaction to antibiotics left the whole area fairly uncomfortable for some time.
The surveillance decision was quite stressful but I’m happy with the decision I’ve made.
But the reason I’m here and writing this is because of how difficult I’ve found it to return to work. I took it fairly easy while recovering from surgery and being preoccupied by surveillance decision. But I thought by now I’d be back to normal with work - I’m self employed, run my own business and was working long hours before the diagnosis, 12 hour days.
I’m not expecting to return to that immediately but I’m really struggling with lack of motivation, focus and energy. I have to really force myself to do things that I were second nature before my surgery. I’m easily distracted and find it hard to concentrate.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.

  • Hi Tom

If you look up the symptoms of low testosterone you will see they are pretty much exactly what you're experiencing.  Definitely worth getting your t levels checked.  Mine are up and down 2 years after my op. If I can exercise I'm fine, but if I pick up a virus or any kind of bug my levels drop fast and I struggle to get back to normal again. When they are low I feel exactly as you are feeling now.

I read that lifting weights is a good way to increase your testosterone levels by as much as 20%, so I started that after my chemo, and sure enough mine increased by almost 18% really quickly. But any illness that stops me working out for more than a week makes me crash again.

I'm actually seeing a private endocrinologist later this month to see if I can get a permanent fix for it.

I hope you get to the bottom of it.

    Best wishes
