Dietary advice

Hello there.  We are new to this journey.  My 79 year old dad had bowel cancer last year which was successfully removed.  From his first annual review we  found out yesterday that the cancer has returned to his stomach and liver and is inoperable unfortunately.   We are meeting with the consultant in 2 weeks to see what treatment is available.  He is also diabetic and has angina/heart issue.

My question is one of dietary advice as I am receiving and reading conflicting information.  His nurse advised a no/low fibre diet. Nothing that is too fibrous- no broccoli or other similar veg (not even in the form of a liquidised soup) no seeds, nuts, brown bread etc. He can have lots of dairy, full fat things, starchy foods though.  When I have search for nutrition advice online I am being given opposite advice - a fibre rich diet with lots of fruit and veg is what he should be having.

To me, getting dad's diet right particularity given the location of his cancer and his other conditions is absolutely critical.

I would be really grateful for any advice.  Thank you xx

So sorry to hear about your dad.  This is very conflicting advice and it might be best to ask the medical team if you can speak to a dietitian or his doctor .  I always sought further advice if I wasn’t sure!

I had Bowel Cancer and had surgery to remove part of my bowel and I also had stomach cancer - though it was unrelated.
I did eat high protein, full fat dairy before and after stomach surgery.  initially after bowel surgery was told to avoid high fibre foods but that was only the first few weeks as I got constipation which was not good!

My experience is you should eat foods that you can tolerate and provide protein and nutrition.

    Good luck!
