Total Gastrectomy

I was diagnosed with stomach cancer on March 1st 2025 and had 4 cycles of FLOT chemo before i had a total gastrectomy on August 15th 2025.  I’ve been very poorly since the op but I’m slowly regaining strength. I’m having problems with dumping even though I’ve been put on Creon capsules. It’s really getting me down as I’m afraid to eat or drink anything if I go out anywhere as I’m afraid of the consequences. Ive also lost one stone in weight since the operation and know that I’m not eating enough. I find it difficult to tolerate the ensure drinks (and other makes) and am wondering if lactose free or gluten free would make a difference?
I see my oncologist soon to discuss beginning a further 4 cycles of chemo.
I would value any comments if you have similar problems.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. • Hi, it’s michelle here. I’m not sure what to say about ensure etc as I could not have them due to my blood sugars.
I have tended to have flavoured water to stay hydrated. if I have gone out, I tend to put my safe food in my bag. Mini cheddars. Cup of soup, Ritz. I didn’t want to become afraid of food like a phobia.
sorry I’m not a lot of help but don’t be hard on yourself. One day at a time.
    Big hugs xx

  • Hi Janet, I was exactly the same and ended up at 45kg. I found sticking to soups with the neutral flavour protein powder was good. I couldn’t tolerate the shakes at all but oddly managed scrambled egg. I’m good with rice and potatoes and any eggs but still two year later cannot tolerate bread or pasta, pastry, cakes, sugar. I still have dumping syndrome but not so often and I just learn to live with it. I now have a fail proof menu but I do deviate with consequences. I consider it a small price to pay. The nutritionist I see tells me that I might always be intolerant to certain foods now so I have to accept some changes to my diet.

  • Hi, it’s very early days for you, things will improve over time, have you read the book - The art of eating without a stomach, it’s really helpful and available on kindle,  Dr. Peter Thatcher's book, "The Art of Eating Without A Stomach: How To Thrive After Gastrectomy," is a comprehensive guide for individuals who have undergone gastrectomy due to stomach cancer. The book covers essential aspects of a gastrectomy diet, including which foods to eat and avoid, meal frequency and quantity, recipes, handling complications, meal tracking, developing a personal diet plan, social gatherings,I also had things like wotsits or quavers as they melt in the mouth, I made homemade rice pudding and added evaporated milk or cream, also made my own shakes with full fat milk adding bananas, hope this is helpful to you, good luck
