Hello again.
Im seeking advice on supplements required after a total gastrectomy.
The dietician at the Royal Marsden has told me that over the counter multivitamins, like Centrum are all that is needed and advised bariatric supplements are not required.
However, after further research I've found that this seems to be completely wrong with advice from US and UK NHS Trusts and Cancer Specialist Health services being bariatric multivitamins with or without iron are necessary for people post TG, plus Calcium Citrate in addition.
Can anyone offer any advice from their own experience please?
What do you take, how much and how often and where do you purchase them from?
Any information would be gratefully received x
Hi,
I have Forceval multi vitamin capsules, ferrous fumerate, calcium D3 chewable tablets and B12 injection every 12 weeks all prescribed.
I only buy vitamin D over the counter.
I now have Creon capsules prescribed to reduce malabsorption, the dietician recommended this
I get gaviscon on prescription.
During treatment and some time after I was prescribed Ensure drinks as a supplement. These stopped as my diet increased. I now eat normally.
Hope this helps
That's helpful thanks SOP. Are your multivitamins bariatric?
I just looked them up and this is what it says
Hi Sop, I’m wondering how you manage to get the vitamin supplement on prescription, my husbands doctor won’t prescribe any (he’s took centrum since coming out of hospital nearly 3 years ago which we’ve had to pay for) also he asked the other month if he could have gaviscon on prescription again they said no he has to buy it. He does get B12 every 3 months though. Was it the doctor or the hospital who prescribed the vits ? Thanks and pleased to hear your doing ok xx
.
Hi, all the vitamins were prescribed on discharge after the surgery, Initially they tried to give me peptic liquid instead of gaviscon, I argued that it didn’t work out any cheaper because the active ingredients are half as effective therefore you need twice as much. I refused to increase the omeprazole as there’s a link to stomach cancer from long term use of PPI’s. It shouldn’t be different across the country, hope this helps
Hi again, he’s on yearly phone calls now with surgeon, should be March next year but I do have e mail address of his nurse if we need her. I thought we all had to buy are own vitamins and things but not sure now you posted that you get yours on prescription. Think I may get in touch with his nurse. I did ask her once if taking Omeprazole would help with the acid (which turned out to be bile) she said no as acid is made in the stomach and he hasn’t one so wouldn’t work, thought we would try that as i have them for myself, the bile is a lot better now by the way. Thanks sop x
