Stage 4 stomach cancer with oesophageal spread and liver metastasis

Hi there

My mum is 59 and was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with cancer of the gastro-oesophageal junction, which had already metatisized to the liver. Due to the spread we have been told it’s inoperable and have been offered palliative care only (chemo). She is totally healthy otherwise and had symptoms for one week in July so this has been a total shock.
Since diagnosis I feel like she has fallen off a cliff - physically and mentally - we’ve had to push back chemo to have a stent fitted as she couldn’t get food or drink down. She is unable to come to terms with the fact surgery won’t be offered and seems to have given up.
We have been told she needs to be well enough for chemo but she is really struggling with her symptoms - constant heaving and bringing up brown blood (doctors and nurses not concerned), with anti sickness tablets being unable to deal with this - it seems to be as a result of the tumour. Despite the stent she is struggling with eating due to the sickness issue. We seem to be going round in circles and I’m worried we won’t make it to chemo at this rate. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of this issue? With many thanks.

  • Yes I have. So if you’d like to talk, just let me know.

  • Sorry to hear about your Mum, my Dad is in a similar position inoperable and incurable and only offerer palliative chemo...

His symptoms are more apparent now...what chemo has she been offered?? We have a 4 week wait for treatment and I just keep thinking every day means possible more spread x

  • Hello there and I’m so sorry to hear about your equally dire situation!

Mum has a squamous cell carcinoma of the gastro-oesophageal junction, spread to the liver. They offered her chemo - cisplatin and Capecitabine. 6 days after chemo she started vomiting blood and had to go back into hospital for radiotherapy - they paused the chemo during this time. She then caught sepsis and we were told she couldn’t have any further treatment at that time.

They assessed mum last week and agreed she could have further treatment, we are restarting chemo on Monday but this time it will be carboplatin and capecitabine - the former should cause less sickness issues.

Is your 4 week wait for treatment to start chemo or to meet with your dads oncologist? I know it does feel like everyday is valuable at this stage - and we’ve ran into so many complications from the start - I think you just have to hope that the chemo is effective when it does start and accept the fact this whole situation isn’t in your control. Love to you and your dad Xxx

  • Hi dbc, apologies for the delay in coming back to you on this. I would love to hear about what alternative medicines you used as part of your treatment plan - are you able to share any details of what worked for you?

    with best wishes

  • Dear Debra.

I was diagnosed with stomach cancer last week. Im in shock ans scared. Im not sure which stage yet. I want to hear your stories.

    Best wishes,

    Lily

  • Hi Lily

I had stomach cancer four years ago and had chemo and a partial gastrectomy.   It’s such a shock to find out you have cancer and at this point the medical team will be doing all sorts of tests to get information on the stage of the cancer so they can decide a treatment plan.

I wrote a Blog which might help you

Once you have a treatment plan it gets easier and my cancer was eradicated by the chemo, it was found at a very early stage, so I was very lucky!

I now lead a normal life, eating and drinking much as before, albeit smaller quantities!

Happy to answer any questions you have!

  • Hi just wondering how your Mum was getting in

Hope all is well as it can be x

  • Hi there

I’m sorry to say we lost mum on 16 November, just 3 months from diagnosis. After trying chemo again she was extremely fatigued and nauseous. We stopped the chemo to see if this improved matters but were informed these are end of life cancer symptoms. The hospital also informed us that a scan she had in October (6 weeks from diagnosis) showed further spread to her peritoneum and this subsequently caused a bowel blockage. We moved into a hospice with mum for her last 9 days as she continued to have a lot of symptoms requiring medication.

It was all so quick in the end and doesn’t feel real at all at the moment. Funeral on Tuesday so that may change things.

Really do hope you are having a better time of things with your dad xxx

  • Hi
