Hi!
My mother in law was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer with esophageal infiltration and with multiple metastasis around her body and.
she stopped eating and drinking since yesterday saying she feels that her throat is is hurting like burning sensation.
Can we do anything to help her at all? Doctors are as ignorant as ever!
Thank you!

  • It must be a very stressful time for everyone. Making your mother in law as comfortable as possible and not pretending it doesn’t exist. For me I am very lucky and survived but I preferred to carry on as normal. It is different for everyone so I’m sure you will read what her feelings are and maybe try to make light of it with humour might reduce the stress and make sure that she has support for final arrangements or a dedicated person to take care of wishes etc. I am sorry for the difficult times but you and your family are not alone.

  • I am sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.  I hope she can be as comfortable as possible.

I had my stomach removed last year but cancer has returned in lymph nodes.

I have had significant problems with bile reflux which on occasions can  include a burning sensation in the throat.  This is similar to stomach acid but, of course, it is not and the std treatments for stomach acid do not work on bile acid.  However a medication called Sucralfate has helped me and reduced the inflammation in my throat.  This can only be obtained on prescription which my oncologist agreed to.  It is in powder form but ok to take in milk.

Unfortunately it has clashed with an immunotherapy drug I am now on and makes me nauseous so I only take in the week I am not taking immunotherapy.

    Good luck.

    David.
