Newly diagnosed

I spent the last 2 and a half months in hospital with a fluid filled lung and a lump on my back. I spoke to several doctors when I was admitted and mentioned the lump but was told it probably had nothing to do with the lung. It was  about 3 weeks before a new consultant listened to me and examined it. I went through several tests all based primarily on the lung all tests came back inconclusive. I could go on about my time in hospital but that’s not while I’m here. Finally the lump was removed and tested about three weeks ago It was tested and I was diagnosed with sarcoma. I was referred to the specialist team in Glasgow and have my first appointment next week where they have said they are going to discuss chemo.

This is my second fight with cancer Twelve years ago I fought breast cancer. I don’t know why I’m having to fight this again but I am trying to remain strong to fight it. At the moment I am terrified that I am going to loose this fight. The lump on my back appears to be growing again .
Today has been a hard day for my husband and I I think we have been trying to put a brave face on things for each other and our family and friends. This is getting harder and harder.

  • Hi and welcome to the soft tissue sarcoma group - even if perhaps none of us would have decided to be here.

Sorry cancer decided it had not finished with you but can well sympathise with the path to the diagnosis.

My wife's sarcoma started in her womb but due to another medical issue ended up being spread to her lungs. She has had two different types of chemotherapy and the second managed to stop her cancer growing - our new gold standard being no progression. Now she gets a checkup every 12 months.

Glasgow is one of the specialist centres for Sacroma so I am very glad you have been referred there. Many doctors are unfamiliar with Sarcoma - if my wife see's a locum and says she has Leiomyosarcoma then end up looking it up on wikipedia,

I can really relate to your husbands position too, he would also be welcome to post here though he might prefer to join us in the forum. Family also have a special group on here Family and friends - Discussion Forum because that brave face sounds like a good idea but often proves easier to say than do.

You might also like to look at the sarcoma uk website since they specialise in this type of cancer.

    <<hugs>>
