Hi everyone I'm currently under Royal Marsden for suspected sarcoma in a lump on my right side of forehead.

This has been ongoing since 4th November when it was spotted by my GP.

Since then I have had an ultrasound more locally, then consultation at RM, MRI with contrast, ultrasound ans Biopsy at RM last week.

My mental health is taking a bit of a battering because this process so far has been hard to deal with. I phoned yesterday and they said they have sone results but she couldn't tell me over the phone and it required more tests but they won't tell me until a telephone clinic on 16th March. How the hell can I keep sane until then? This is the day after my 30th birthday and I have this hanging over me.

How long do biopsies generally take?

Thank you if you have read all this, Kelly x

  • Hi Kelly and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that you've been undergoing scans and biopsies to investigate a suspected sarcoma.

Unfortunately there's no hard and fast length of time that it takes for a biopsy to be looked at. A lot depends on how busy the pathology laboratories are. For example, when I had a mole removed and sent off to be biopsied I was told that I should get the results back within 2-4 weeks but it actually took 6 weeks due to the backlog at the time (3 years ago).

Also you have said that your biopsy needs to have further tests done so that is also going to add time to when the results will be back for your consultant to have a look at.

Most of us would agree that waiting for the results of scans and biopsies is the worse time and you need to develop a coping strategy. Some people throw themselves into their work, others clean the house from top to bottom, I immersed myself with my hobbies and some people find mindfulness helpful.

You might find this article on how to ease worry when waiting for medical test results helpful. This link will take you to the NHS recommended mental health apps, some of which are free.

Keep taking to others in this group as well as they will all understand what you're going through at the moment.

    Sending a supportive ((hug))

    Hi Kelly,

I understand entirely as I am in exactly the same position. I have a suspected sarcoma deep in the muscle of my shoulder. I first went to the doctors in November then had ultra sound, MRI and am now being sent to the sarcoma centre in Cambridge for a biopsy.

My mental health has taken a massive battering too. My 60th is on the 8th march so I sympathise. I planned to retire and enjoy life! Actually I mean 'plan'!

The only thing that is getting me through is this:

At the moment I feel fine and am carrying on as usual. I am trying to keep the terrors at bay as currently I feel OK so have no reason not to do the same as I was doing previous to the 'knowledge'. You can have one foot in the past and one in the future, but then you you miss the present and that is what we actually know we have.

Hope this helps. people on the site have told me to keep busy but I know it is easier said than done and I know the sinking sick feeling every time you think about it.

You're not alone so keep your pecker up girl! I'm going to get fit so I can deal with whatever is slung at me!

Contact me whenever you want, I will let you know how my keep fit is going!
