Hello everyone,

My lovely mother (54) has been diagnosed with a sarcoma. It all started roughly two months ago with complaints comparable with a hernia in the lower back. The doctor decided to go for a MRI scan- of a small fraction of the lower back- and we went home with the diagnosis of a hernia. After some weeks this pain was unbearable and was getting worse. The neurologist told us this was for sure no hernia. Moreover, there was a painless lump growing (fast) on the right hip. After a CT scan we got the diagnosis of a sarcoma. Moreover, it had already spread to several spots in the lungs. Still, we don't know exactly which type of sarcoma it is, since the tumor is dedifferentiated. Pathologist said it looks like a chondrosarcoma and synovial sarcoma..

We just started with chemotherapy and hope the tumor will respond well. Moreover, the tumor is DNA sequenced, which could reveal possible drug targets for second line therapy. Still my mom is suffering a lot from pain in the lower back/hip and muscle pain around this area. She cannot walk. Is there anyone with a similar story and tips for this pain?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to hear that your mother has been diagnosed with a sarcoma and is suffering with a lot of pain. Are her team aware of this as they should be able to help with pain management as well as treating her?

I'm going to tag my fellow Community Champion into my reply as he looks after this group and may be able to give you more help and information than I can as I had a different type of cancer so know very little about sarcomas.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
