Hi, I’m new to the group and writing on behalf of my 76 year old mother.

She was diagnosed with a leiomyosarcoma in a muscle on the underside of her forearm in July. After 5 weeks of radiotherapy plus 4 weeks she had a scan in November and was told the radiotherapy hadn’t worked and the tumour has continued to grow.  Unfortunately they decided to amputate her arm, she had the operation last Friday.

I’m asking for advice from anyone who has had an amputation about;

- recovery time, phantom pain, how long did you wait for a prosthetic?

- what benefits can she apply for?

 Thanks in advance.

Has anyone experienced amputation of an arm - above or below the elbow? Any advice please? Pray tone1

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

    I'm sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with a leiomyosarcoma and has had to have her arm amputated. It must be a very difficult time for all the family.

    I haven't had an amputation but I noticed that your post hadn't had any responses. If you type 'amputation' into the search bar in this group it pulls up a number of posts mentioning this in the last few months. You could then have a read of these and respond to any where you think the poster might be able to help you further.

    You might find this information about benefits and other financial support helpful in seeing what your mum might be entitled to. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll see there's a benefits checker and benefits calculator to help you as well. You can also call the Macmillan Support Line free on 0808 808 0000 and speak to one of their welfare rights team. They are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm.

    When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
