Hi my husband had a half foot amputation last year in the hope of the surgeon getting all the cancer from a callus from the ball of his foot. Unfortunately the sarcoma had metastisised to his left armpit and his back, also there are lumps on his right groin, both butt cheeks and in both lungs. After his first round of doxorubicin he developed mucosistis in his mouth .We treated that with nystatin, gelclair mw and lidocaine. He was unable to talk for a few days and it was very painful. The second chemo was given on a 75% dose and the mouth problem wasn't as bad. This time he said everything he eats tastes greasy. We have the nystatin on standby and fluconazole just in case the mucositis flares up again but this greasiness is doing our heads in!! Has anybody else had this or something like it?
Thanks in advance
:)
Dear bootsy, I’ve had a root around and found this recommendation from a cancer patient, obviously I can’t say whether it would work or not, you could check with your cancer nurse specialist to see if she thinks it might help.
The Benefit of Palate Cleansing
Another debilitating eating-related side effect is a persistent metallic taste in the mouth. We can combat this with a technique called “palate cleansing.” Palate cleansing removes the metallic taste from our mouth and the perceived weight of a dish simultaneously. This simple technique allows us to get more nutrient-dense meals into our loved one.
You can achieve this cooking technique by adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar and a proportional amount of sugar to your meal while it’s cooking. The vinegar will leave a clean feeling in the mouth at the end of the bite. Vinegar also helps remove pungency from food, and will make it feel less heavy and greasy in the mouth. The sugar in this technique masks the taste and smell of the vinegar, which allows it to work its magic without an offensive odor or taste.
Thank you for that. I have given him cups of hot water and lemon juice to cut through the greasiness but he's not overly struck on that idea!!! Hopefully this will pass soon as it is only 3 days since chemo #3.
