Efudix, AK, holiday and panic!

I visited my doctor last week for a lesion on my back I was concerned about which has grown a lot in the last couple of months.  After using the dermascope, doctor said it was a traumatized nevus so to return in 10 weeks to check on it.

I also mentioned a dry patch on my neck that's been there for months.  Apparently this is Actinic Keratosis - I do have a lot of sun damage unfortunately.

I'm to use Efudix cream for 4 weeks on the AK patch but I'm due to go on holiday after Easter so asked if I should keep the area covered.  Doctor said to go enjoy my holiday, using SPF50 and begin the Efudix when I get back.

I'm panicking about being in the sun.  I've been looking forward to this trip for a long time but now i feel like cancelling it (non refundable due to departure being 2 weeks away).

If I go, which sun cream is best?  Should avoid going out of the hotel totally?  I don't know how to manage this so I'd really appreciate some advice.

  • Hi Buxton  It is natural to panic but try and stay calm.  I have had 2 basal cell cancers removed from my face 3 years ago and panicked like mad on my first holiday in Cornwall.  I use No. 7 Factor 50 facial suncream (3 for 2 normally at Boots). Iwas told to use it every day, even when hanging washing out, which I have done and it works a treat. I did show it to my plastic surgeon and he said it was brilliant as 5 star rated.  I use it as part of my make up regime. I use Pizz Buin Factor 50 sun lotion on my arms and try and keep legs covered.  If I can I do wear long sleeved loose clothing and keep reapplying factor 50.  I wear wide brimmed sun hats too and prescription sun glasses. My husband used Efudix on his face last year and was prescribed it 2 weeks before we went away, so he left it until we returned home as it does make the area rather scabby.  He just put copious amounts of Factor 50 sun cream (mine) on his face and it was fine.  The efudix worked its magic and his lesion completely disappeared. This site is wonderful for helpful advice, go on holiday and enjoy and let us know how you go on.  I completely understand how you feel as I was never a sun worshipper, always careful with sun cream but got two nasty skin cancers and at 74 could have done without them.  My sun cream collection takes up as much room as my clothes these days!! xx

  • Thank you so much Harlyn. I'm heading into town now to clear the shelves in Boots of different SPF to try.

I've always loved the sun but only really used adequate sunscreen for the last 10 years or so.  Hindsight eh....

I'm worried about being somewhere hot and having to keep covered.  I sweat enough as it is at my age.

I hope you and your husband stay well.

  • Hi there - I am in exactly the same boat. My holiday which has been booked for a year is on 1st June and I have a 6 week treatment plan. My dermatologist told me I could either start and stop for the holiday or begin when I get back. I think I am going to enjoy the holiday and start the treatment afterwards as read it is best to stop 2-3 weeks before going in the sun! Good luck and enjoy your holiday :)
