Skin graft failure!

I had the fourth surgery on my nose counting Mohs for Squamous cell carcinoma and most of the skin died. This was the one to give me a somewhat normal appearance. I was devastated. I also had four weeks of radiation therapy and the doctor wanted to wait at least three months. It was four, my nose was splinted inside and out. When the stitches were removed the skin was hard and he started cutting away and said "Perhaps I was a little too aggressive" and we may be looking at another graft from my forehead! Shock, anger and, depression in that order. I  got a second opinion and a new doctor. He said that the radiation affects the tissues ability to heal. He also said there are other graft options but would prefer to wait and give the tissue more time to heal. This started in August last year and I am so tired of using bandages and am dreading another surgery. I'm going back to work and that will help me to stay busy. This really sucks...

  • Hi

I'm so sorry to read that tour skin graft has failed. I can't begin to imagine how disappointing this must be for you.

Did your 'new doctor' give you an idea of when you'll be able to have corrective surgery? I can completely understand you dreading that thought. I spent all of last year having surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and I'm really keeping everything crossed that this year will be treatment free.

When you feel up to it, it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    ((hugs))
