Micronodular scalp bcc

Hi

I've been told that I've got a large micronodular bcc on my scalp, biopsy confirmed. I was referred as very urgent by my consultant dermatologist to the hospital. I have been seen by the plastic surgeon and told I will have surgery to remove it along with reconstructive surgery with a graft from my neck. Until they operate they won't know if it's grown into my skull bone if it has another operation will be done. The hospital had no idea of my history of a significant number of bcc's and a melanoma and sentinel lymph node biopsy I have had and I'm in year 8 of 10 years of check ups. I have been told by the surgeon they have no idea when surgery will be but it could be 6 months or more. Has anybody else had a micronodular bcc which are aggressive rather than nodular bcc's and is it normal to wait so long for surgery. I'm concerned as I've had it for a few years it wasn't painful & as it's not visible I had no idea what it looked like & I never thought it would be a cancer thought it was exema or dry skin & forgot it was there. If anyone has experience of a micronodular bcc could you let me know please. I'm also going to have a permanent bald patch. Thank you so much

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I haven't had the same type of skin cancer as you but I noticed that you hadn't had any replies to your post yet.

I've searched the group for previous posts which mention 'micronodular BCC' and found these for you to have a look through. The most recent person to mention this type of BCC was  so I've 'tagged' them into my reply to you in the hope that they will pop on and share their experiences with you.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and any treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi there,

I had a bcc removed from my scalp in October, I waited from around April time. All I know is it was a BCC but I don’t know if the exact pathology. I had a skin graft from my thigh. It had got to a reasonable size as treated for something else. The area healed quite well and I’m actually still waiting my post op check as the appt been moved a number of times. I do have a bald spot, it’s around 3 x 2.5cm, it’s a bit of a pain but I cover it with my hairstyle or pull my hair across it.

So my bcc prob wasn’t same type but I’ve had scalp surgery

I hope you get yours sorted soon!

  • Hi thank you for replying hope you're doing OK. Was your scalp very painful afterwards I want it doing before it spreads but dreading it to. Blushx

  • It was sore but not unbearable, more when touched. I had a dressing sutures to my head so that’s a bit sore more than anything but I only took paracetamol a few times. I am doing fine now thanks, I do have another spot near to the original site which I want them to check but this was there all along with the larger lesion, I’m suspicious of it but my margins were clear so that is good. For me there was the most irritating itch with the lesion so I was very pleased to get rid of the thing!

you will be fine! I have a collection of hats now for the summer xx

  •   I had a large mixed micronodular and something else (can't remember now!) BCC on my scalp. It was about 4 or 5 cm from memory and I had a skin flap that still left a 2.5cm open wound to heal by secondary intention. I had it done privately as I had had it for 4 years but the surgeon said it would have been quite ok to leave it for longer and have it done on the NHS.  He wasn't at all worried about it.  I had MOHS surgery which was definitely worth it as I had at least 3 layers taken out so if I had had a simple excision it would have been at least 3 surgeries. Healing was lengthy and stressful but everything is good now. All healed over. I have a bald spot but even short hair covers it fine. Good luck. Xxx

  • Hi Poppy, I've recently been diagnosed with a BCC on my scalp that is 3cm at the moment. The Consultant that I saw said that I would be seeing a plastic surgeon to get it removed and my next appointment with Dermatology is in July. I am just about to start the 6 weeks of Aldara cream. I haven't been told if I will need a skin graft yet but wondered how big your initial BCC was?

  • Hi there!

I would say it’s actually not too much larger than the original lesion, but there is a bit of depth to it xx

  • Hi did they tell you to start Aldara cream to reduce the size of the lesion before having it removed?  I did ask my consultant whether I could take that to try and reduce it first but he said no, he wants it left as it is until it’s removed.  Thanks

  • Hello, they didn't actually say. I'm guessing they wanted to see if the Aldara would clear it first before attempting surgery. My consultant wasn't very talkative unfortunately. I finished the Aldara this week but don't see dermatology again until the end of August now. Feels like a long wait. Do you have a date for your removal?

  • Wave Some of these consultants have no interest in the mental health of patients at all and the  stress that is caused by Cancer. The end of August  is a long wait and I feel for you.   My NHS wait for me to see my 1st derm was 31/2 months after the result of my 1st biopsy on  1/4/23. They offered removal from end November.  Some details are on my profile. As it is 4cm infiltrating there was no way I am waiting that long as I have seen it increase in size in just a few months.  Just got a date of 23rd of this month for private removal. It is a horrible amount of money but I cannot just sit and watch it grow as I am not going to be able to hide the loss of hair as it is. The NHS is hopeless in some areas now.  How do you feel the Aldara  has gone? Do you know what type of basal cell you have?
