Scalp BCC removal and skin flap

I had a large scalp BCC removed last week.  I was left with a 5.5 cm wound 3 layers down and this was partially closed with a skin flap leaving a smaller 2.5 X 1 cm open wound.  I am feeling very low and tearful today and worrying about infection and healing times. Does anyone have any info at all about when the stitches might come out, how long it might take for the open part to heal over, how long I might have the bandage on my head or anything else I can do to aid healing.  I feel very helpless.at the moment.

  • Hi

I'm so sorry to read how low you're feeling but also angry that your hospital team didn't provide you with all this information when you had the surgery. For a definitive answer on when you need your stitches removing you'll need to speak to your skin cancer nurse specialist or key worker as it'll depend on lots of different things and what applied to someone else on the forum might not apply to you.

While you're on the phone to them also ask about the healing time for the part of the wound that has been left to heal naturally and how best to protect the site from infection.

I'm really sorry that you were left with no information, it really isn't good enough Disappointed

  • Hi

I'm just checking in to see how you are today. I'm hoping you're feeling better and that you managed to get your questions answered by your SCNS/key worker yesterday.

    Sending a big (((hug)))

  • Thanks for your advice.  I had the removal done privately but the wound care is being done at my local GP practice.  I had an appointment this morning and they managed to speak with the surgeon during the appointment so they have some info but I still don't have the written instructions which is getting very frustrating.  I have asked for them about 5 or 6 times.  Anyway the good thing is there is no sign of infection and the wound has already started to close up a little so everything is going as expected so far. Everyone agrees the staples need to stay in quite a bit longer.  I will go back to the clinic where I had the surgery next week as I hope to feel up to the journey then.  It looks as if I may have the bandage on my head for quite a while longer.  I would love to be hear from others who had scalp BCCs because everyone keeps saying it's an awkward part of the body to dress.

  • That's great to hear that your wound is already beginning to heal and that there's no sign of infection.

I have never been given written instructions but I have always been told verbally what to do and when before I've left the hospital. However, all my surgery has been done through the NHS so I don't know how the private sector works.

I hope everything continues to heal well

  • I had my bcc done privately and before I left was given appointment to have stitches out at the private hospital, given an appointment for 5 weeks time to see Consultant. Before I left the room I was given a paper all about the care I needed whilst healing. Telephone numbers for Nurses during the day and up to 8pm and then another number of the private ward nurses for anything out of hours.  Couldn't fault the service at all xx

  • That's great to hear Slight smile

No one should leave hospital with out knowing how to look after their wound, when their stitches need removing (if appropriate) and how to contact the hospital team. It's good to hear that you were looked after well.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. • That sounds really good Harlyn.  I have now finally seen written instructions and the wound needs washing, antibiotic ointment and redressing every 2-3 days.  What a stress not having this until now.  I am seeing the surgeon again on Friday.  How long did you have the bandages on? The nurse seems to think she can't dress the wound without it but they itch like crazy and make it difficult for me to return to work as I look like an extra in a WWI movie.

  • Oh dear but glad you have written instructions now.  I was lucky as I am retired, but told another lady on here who was asking, had I been at work, I wouldn't have felt comfortable going back for at least 4 weeks.  My face had lots of sticky dressings on and they started to fall off within about 4 days.  The Consultant said they would with eating, but not to disturb them for 48 hours.  I gradually took them off after about 5 days as they were flapping about.  Then it hit me when I saw the scar.  I was told once they were off I could very gently splash my face with water but no soap so that is what I did.  I have got to say this morning when I look at the scat it is amazing. Yes you can see it, but hardly noticeable really. The Consultant has done a wonderful job and it is only 11 weeks.  Just hope the other one I have had one Wednesday is as good.  Take care and keep in touch. x
