Stitches didn’t hold skin excision

Hi everyone, I had a skin excision 4 weeks ago for squamous carcinoma on my ankle.  When the stitches were due to come out after two weeks the wound had started splitting.  Long story short over the last two weeks the wound area is getting wider and seemingly turning back into the circle which was cut out.   it is being treated as an open wound.

my question to you is does anyone have any experience of this as the nurses I see for dressing changes can’t or won’t give me any idea as to when this wound might heal.  I understand everyone heals at different paces but an average to work to would be nice.  It is quite debilitating being on the ankle.

thanks in advance Heart

  • Hi ,

I am sorry to hear that your excision is not healing up as you hoped.

I have not had this sort of surgery on my ankle but I did have two skin grafts on my nose that did not take and like your case were subsequently treated as open wounds.

They took about 6 weeks to fully close. The lower leg area may take longer.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care

  • Hi Diddiedaisey,

How is your open wound doing now? I've been babying a WLE on my shin since Monday because of stories like yours. My surgeon didn't think I needed to avoid exercise but I am. Last year I had a punch biopsy closed with two stitches that popped open about two weeks like yours. Best wishes, Cindy

  • I had an excision and skin flap on my scalp and was left with a 2.5x2 open wound - it was a very deep one, nearly down to the bone. I am 6 weeks in and it has granulated well and is very shallow now so hoping the skin will grow over soon.  I have been eating lots of protein - seeds, fish etc.  I think it all depends how wide and deep it is and how much blood flow there is to the area etc.  Good luck with it.  I have been quite depressed at times waiting for it to heal.
