I am wondering about chances of a reacurance of Infiltrative Basal cell ? I had MOHS done six months ago. I ended up with a 2.5cm wide and 2cm deep hole in my forehead. I had a skin graft and am still healing. I go for skin checks every three months. I passed my first skin check but my second one I had a Actinic Keratosis froze off. I am just concerned about the chance part of a root was missed in MOHS and my I will end up with an even deeper hole in my forehead

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

It's natural to worry that maybe some of your basal cell carcinoma (BCC) might have been missed when you had Mohs' surgery six months ago.

I haven't had this procedure myself but if you take a look at this information from BAD (British Association of Dermatologists) you will see that it says:

"During the Mohs’ micrographic surgery procedure, the ‘roots’ of the skin cancer are located and removed. This is done in stages by removing the tumour together with a thin (1-2mm) layer of surrounding normal tissue.  After each stage the tissue is frozen and cut into thin slices that are then stained with a dye. The edges are then examined very carefully under the microscope.  If the tumour is found at the edge of the slice, then a further slice of tissue is removed, but only in the area where the tumour remains. Therefore, close to 100% of the cancer is located and removed."

    I hope this helps

One of my 3 facial BCC's was infiltrative as that one around my lip caused another lesion  as originally only had 2. All 3 were taken off

same day by Mohs. I worry also about possible reoccurrence but surgeon claimed all cancer gone since Mohs surgery at least for now that is all we can keep hoping. Did your Mohs surgeon state he had eradicated all the cancer or not at the time of your surgery?
