Sorry my story is so long

I feel it’s just one mess up after another,

Back in March 2019 I went to my GP with what I was convinced was a form of skin cancer On the side of nose by cheek, GP told me it wasn’t and even got another Dr in to check as I wasn’t convinced, was sent away with some cream, by Oct it was worse so went back, this time a different Dr took one look and said “I don’t like the look of this” will refer on to hospital, hospital appointment, yep looks like a bcc dr said we need to do a biopsy to make sure, I then pointed out a ridge line that goes across part of my nose, he took a look and said oh yeah looks like an infiltrate bcc! ( notice I had to point this out) , week or so later had biopsy but then had to wait 12 weeks for results!!
was as expected an Infiltrate bcc, at my appointment was told they would do a extraction with a skin flap, I asked if I would have MOHs surgery to be told “not needed“. Op to be around March time, due to pandemic this was now put on hold,

So 28th July I have my op I was terrified, they were great and reassured me all will be fine they do this all the time.
results would be 1-2 months, I was quite pleased how it looked considering what I was expecting, but the loss of sensation in part of my nose I didn’t expect and wasn’t told could happen, anyway time passed it was healing but still felt the same, still constantly itching the odd shooting pains, maybe it’s the scar healing I thought, over time I was convinced this is not right they couldn’t of got it all out.
2 months passed I heard nothing after 3 months I rang the hospital asking when I would get my results as I was told 1-2 months, to be told they shouldn’t have told you that, we have a huge back log you will just have to wait for an appointment, I mention it didn’t feel right and was still itching, again told wait for appointment, after 4 months I rang again to be told the same again, NO appointments, I will chase it up for you but you just have to wait, again mentioned it didn’t feel right.
so yesterday after a full 4 1/2 month from surgery I get my phone call appointment.... sorry but unfortunately we didn’t quite get it all out and will need to operate again! . Unfortunately due to pandemic all operations are cancelled again and we don’t know when you op will be, normally it would be 1- 2 Months time, but it could be a long wait. So I said what no idea at all are we talking weeks months years? Sorry I don’t know

so yeah I’m feeling hurt, angry, upset, terrified and hugely let down with pretty much no support at all ( on top of this I also had a breast cancer scare and my biopsy was due the day after lockdown in March, So cancel, but thankfully that was done once hospitals reopened And luckily was told it was calcium cluster which can sometimes be a sign of early breast cancer but all was ok and they have placed a metal clip in the area so can keep an eye on it.
2020 has been the worst but now I’m feeling like 2021 will be exactly the same

feeling heartbroken and totally drained

sorry for long rant,  I Just need to get my frustrations out Somehow

  • Hi - so sorry to hear about your experience with the NHS and understand how worried you must have been, especially with the stress of your  breast cancer scare.

Perhaps you could send a letter/email to the consultants secretary to let them know how stressed you are about the wait. They could maybe give you a better idea of when you could have your surgery.

The waiting is nerve wracking, and you have the understanding and support of all of us who have been through it. I hope you hear back about your operation date soon.

    Hi Bouquets,

I am so sorry that you have had such a difficult time. I had also been to my GP more than once about my cancer before I was diagnosed but I was fortunate and my hospital were very efficient and the surgeon got all my cancer first time. I am not surprised you are feeling upset and angry, I felt similarly and I have not had nearly as tough a time as you. Have you tried talking to the MacMillan helpline? I called when I got my diagnosis and the person I spoke to was incredibly knowledge and sympathetic. Do you have resources for private surgery? As you don't even have a date it could be worth considering if you do. I didn't go private but I had a private skin check (obviously I don't trust my GPs ability to diagnose cancer) and it was a totally different experience to an NHS appointment.

  • I am waiting to have two more bccs removed in January, but I have asked to be referred to a hospital where they do the MOHs surgery, because at least you know they are getting it all, because the one on my nose they are doing in January is in the same place as where they removed the last one, which was just cut out, don’t be afraid to ask to be referred some where else, if you think it would be better for you.

Ty, unfortunately I don have private health care and can’t afford it myself, I don’t even get sick pay from my work so my whole years holidays was taken up with appointments, isolating, surgery and recovery, plus loss of earning just to add to the mix. Thank you for your advice I will take that in consideration x

I email the hospital the day they told me the bad news, with photos attached showing the ridge on my nose plus scar change, plus a bit of a rant at my frustrations, today I’ve received a text message saying I have an appointment for this Monday, hopefully I will get a few answers as to when or what will be involved this time round

  • Hi Bouquets

So pleased to hear you have an appointment so soon. I wish I'd made a list of questions to ask in my consultation as it all seemed to pass in a blur, hope your consultation goes well. Make sure you get all the information you need x

    Hi me again

I Had my phone call appointment, was told only a little needs to come out, and that they had got the deep layers out it’s now just the top layer they need to work on, and surgery will be in jan/feb, I again mentioned about the ridge line on my nose, he said yes we have seen the photos and don’t think that’s anything to worry about! ( no explanation to what it is as this part iching a lot, but as the area is still quite numb it’s hard to tell if that make sense) they said all I need is an extraction no skin grafts etc,  I asked if it would be mohs this time to be sure, no that would be a long wait and not needed, but I was told this last time!!
I said will I Not have an appointment to see the surgeon before the operation,  He said if your concerned I can arrange an appointment after Xmas for you to see us,

so I now get a call my surgery is this Wednesday, don’t get me wrong I’m grateful it’s so soon but I said I thought I was going to have an appointment first, to which she said well will keep the appointment for your op as it is and you can discuss any concerns before they do it. My concerns now are will I feel rushed into just having the extraction there and then as it’s all booked in.
I just want it over with but terrified in case they don’t get it all again.

  • Hi there - so sorry to hear you are feeling rushed and worried by your coming surgery. For some reason the NHS doesn't seem to favour Mohs surgery for BCCs, and a lot of hospitals don't offer it at all. It seems like a good thing that they have arranged your surgery so quickly. Could you write or email the surgeon outlining your concerns, and ask about other treatment options such as Mohs or radiotherapy. Then they could maybe get back to you before the surgery date and give you a chance to consider your options. Stay strong, they've nearly got it all, you'll soon be clear and free x
