Mohs specialists

Hi ,

I have a referral  to a dermatologist about a probable 1.2 cm nodular bcc on my nose.

From research I see that Mohs is the best option but cannot understand the whole mohs surgery area.

I have looked at the list for mohs specialists on the BSDS web site and they seem to be very rare. Yet on checking a fairly  local hospital which claims to have mohs their dermatologist is not listed.

Does this mean not everyone doing mohs is an expert ?

All a bit of a minefield. I have a dermatologist appointment soon so I am assuming she will give me the appropriate referral.

thanks

  • I checked with the dermatologist's secretary and have found the most likely referral and they are on the list

  • Hi Alison, I don’t know whereabouts you are in the UK but I had MOHs surgery done 10 days ago at Guys Hospital, London Bridge. They have a Laser & Dermatology department with many MOHs specialists working there. I had it done on the NHS.

  • Thanks that's good to know

  • Hi there - did you have to wait a long time for your MOHS following diagnosis.  I am wondering about contacting Guys, if their waiting list is shorter.  I have been on a waiting list for 12 months now and surgery anticipated for March 2026 at present!

  • Hi. I had to wait 5 months for surgery at Guys on the NHS.

I had all of my consultations and biopsy done privately but even then it took several months to get to the stage of being transferred to Guys list by my private consultant.

I last saw him in January and Guys contacted me in April. I had surgery 2 weeks ago.

I was there yesterday for a check up and was told that Guys seem to be one of the main hospitals in the UK doing MOHs. Therefore their lists are long.

You do seem to have been waiting an extraordinarily long time. It would be worth asking your GP if you could be referred there.

Privately, you could have MOHs surgery for around £5000 and probably within a couple of months.

    Wishing you well.

  • Thank you so much, I will certainly look in to this further.  I hope you are making a good recovery.  Take care.

  • Good luck.

I’m doing far better than I was expecting at this stage, so soon after surgery, thank you.

Every single one of the team in Dermatology at Guys are absolutely lovely, from the Receptionist to the Surgeons. I am needle phobic and they were very patient and understanding and did their best to distract and calm me with chit chat.

    • Hi AlisonN..... I don't know where you live but I'm south East kent and canterbury hospital has a MOHS specialist. nhs and private.. he has a very good reputation
