Hi - diagnosed 20 Nov  - opted for HT and RT with T3bN0 locally advanced, Gleason 9, had follow on PCT scan  24 Nov, spoke with  consultant 8 Dec who said now on pelvic node. Had first  Goserelin injection mid December with RT to be done at different Hospital following request from consultant. As of last week hadn’t heard anything and asked GP to seek clarification as consultant and urology team not answering my questions put in email. Response from hospital to provide RT is that I will see an oncologist soon with RT to follow. How long is ‘soon’?

im trying to avoid anxiety but freaked out by poor communication and feeling a bit left hanging. I’m trying not to be unreasonably concerned but family history of rapid decline and death from aggressive spread leaves me feeling pretty terrified.

  • Self advocacy is the most maddening problem apart from the worry of the cancer.

I have emailed the various departments in the last few years but a consultant will never reply. They will require you to be face to face or on the phone. So please don’t worry about the replies.

Everyone else you email like the secretaries for appointments or for the secretaries for consultants will get back to you on the phone normally. So relax.

It’s better to phone if you can which can be very frustrating but the quickest way of getting a result. Be polite all the time but ring as much as you like.

As for your anxiety about familial health issues you should try and talk those over with the GP and specialists form a historical point of view but the stress needs to be helped by professionals in talk therapies face to face or on the phone. There are MacMillan or Samaritan places to call. You could also chat to friends or family who you trust.

You can ask, rant, chat or research issues on this forum with all of us because we are in the same boat and can help you. Just be honest if you can as this is totally anonymous if you want it to be. So I hope that helps but if it doesn’t someone after me will help.

    Good luck

  • Hi BMAC

Looks like they got it in time and it is still potentially curable.

The main thing here is that now on HT should stop it in its tracks and then RT can start at some point.

There often is a wait from when starting HT and  Radiotherapy treatment, the idea is to make it potentially smaller and less active, so a few weeks/months wait is ok.

I hope that u get to see the specialist soon.

    All the best

    Steve

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the group from me although I am so sorry to find you joining us.

So you have started on Hormone Therapy which will in effect put the cancer "to sleep" stop any further growth or spread and get you ready for radiotherapy. The normal gap between starting Hormone Therapy and starting Radiotherapy is 4 - 6 months although it can be longer (mine was 12 months - if you click on my name or avatar you can find out why).

Once you see Oncology they will arrange your Radiotherapy fractions and in your case - as in mine - will arrange to cover the seminal vesicles, pelvis and pelvic lymph nodes.

You do need to be proactive and if you can't get a date from Oncology - try contacting your hospital PALS Office (Patient Advisory and Liaison Service) - tell them your issues and tell them the delay in your appointment is causing stress and anxiety.

Our Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) is there for you if you need some help and advice in dealing with the stress of the journey - please do give them a call.

Please feel free to ask anything here - nothing is to trivial and we will try and help.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks, appreciate this and I’m on the case so to speak.  Will hopefully update with positive news soon.

  • Just to update had a date for oncology early Feb. And PSA gone done to 0.65 after starting HT end Nov with first Goserelin injection mid Dec. Next injection March. Thanks again for your input/advice.

  • Hello

Thank you for the update. PSA of 0.65 shows the Hormone Therapy is working well, and has "put the cancer to sleep" and stopped it spreading. The next step is Radiotherapy to kill the cancer cells off.

Do keep us updated and feel free to ask any questions. Now your oncology appointment has arrived and the PSA has dropped I hope the anxiety is reduced.

    Best wishes - Brian.
