Husband referred for PET scan in 8 weeks! What's a normal waiting time?

My husband was given a positive result to prostate Cancer on 12th Jan this year 2026.

He has already had a biopsy CT scan and MRI. Now he has been told 2 weeks later that he has to have a pet scan of which he might have to wait up to 8 weeks for this. He will probably have to travel from where we live in Wrexham North Wales to Cardiff or Swansea in South Wales!!!

I thought speed was the essence! Totally floored by this.

  • Im in the same position

    Wrexham 4 to 8 weeks

Or Swansea  3 days after call which is 5 hrs each way unless I leave at silly o'clock

    1. Im Lucky that my team are going to start my treatment as they have the results from biopsy and ct scans etc  but as I have it in lymph nodes  they wanted to check it had not gone elsewhere b4 treatment

  • I doubt that there is a normal across the country.

I am fortunate in that I live in Sheffield within 15 minutes drive of the 3 major hospitals.

I have had all the above scans over the last 2 years and had an appointment within 2/3 weeks of the referral.

The post code lottery is alive and well and I hope that you get the earliest appointment available.

  • How did your long day go ?

  • Hi. Well it was a long old day. Thank goodness we went by train! A lot of strangers helped us so much. We were so grateful. Unsung heroes I wish I knew who they were so I could really thank them. Husband ok. Started taking hormone tablets today. We now shall have to wait for the next chapter.
    kind regards

  • What is his Gleason score?  I had a similar experience 2 years ago at Wrexham. I waited 5 weeks for a PET scan (Wrexham had a mobile PET scanner at the time but the contract for that has ended and a permanent one won’t be ready until end 2027). My Gleason score was 4+5=9 but they would not start treatment until the completion of a bone scan and PET scan. My understanding is that they can send you to Manchester instead of south wales.
